So, basically, I'm looking to spike my beard once it's longer (its only about an inch at the mo, recently been trimmed), however I'm not sure how to go about doing it, do I need to cut it into shape? Or just use wax/gel to mould it, I'm looking to get it in 3 spikes, a bit like Robb Flynn from Machine Head (if you know who they are).

Oh and for discussion value, what kind of beard (if any) do the people of the escapist like?

Cheers in advance for any advice

EDIT: By Beard I actually meant Goatee...shhh it's late I'm allowed to make mistakes

I'm sorry, but I've just gotta say...ew. D: That sounds like it will be neither comfortable nor good looking.

Don't rub it in. I'm 23 and I can't grow anything more than a patchy mess. Seriously, not a hair grows on a patch under my chin and it looks like I'm growing mutton chops because my facial hair refuses to join to the beard around my mouth.

Nice and simple, kinda that grizzled unshaven but still clean. No longer then a few mm.

Oh, and never just the neck! Why oh why do people grow just the neckbeard!

Is this at all Movember related? Anyway, if you're going to try to spike your beard, then I'm no help at all; it's not my kind of thing. But you'll be waiting a long while before you can do anything with it, really.

Anyway, my beard:

Regrettably, the rest of the face is not mine... But I've got the beard!

Basicly this... Also not grey... :p

Never seen a neckbeard like that before... Its also a no-go in my world, almost as bad as hair on the back...

I have a lot of space between my beard follicles, so I need to let my sides grow at least 3/4" to look good. Right now I'm clean shaven (well, stubble) because it's nice every once in a while to let the skin breathe. As for the original question, I think it's better to use gel first, and then if that doesn't work you can cut it into shape. If you start by cutting, and then it turns out you need gel, you can't go back.

Sometimes... in my nightmares... the neck beard and the back hair meet up....

I think it would be better if you didn't look just like every other metal fan douche and grew a proper beard.

I was planning on getting some sleep now, but with that picture in mind, that will be a difficult task... :(

I did not need to see neck beard today.

I've been letting mine grow out for 'No-Shave November', its working out not bad thus far.

Tried that, it looked awful, the goatee suits me better

Erm, thanks for the advice? I guess...

As someone who has actually grown a near 4 inch long goatee before, generally the only way I've found it to stay into points is by braiding or using elastics. You can also try a little bit of wax and rub and twist it and it might stay for you.

As for currently, I have basically the whole beard grown in short, getting rid of the neck portion. Also some random hairs that have been growing in higher on my cheek above the line formed by my beard from ear to mouth I get rid of.

I've tried a lot of different styles though, when you have a good amount of facial hair to work with you might as well experiment and find a style you like.

Well my intention is to grow mine and braid it a bit, however when it gets to about 1 or 2 inches long I usually get fed up and shave which is usually a fatal flaw in growing my beard... However the best way is usually just to braid it and use either a small elastic bobble or something like a bead to fasten it to.

you'll probably have to use some sort of concoction, as beard hair is pretty frizzy and bristly when left to its own devices.

ummmm, thanks for the specific question. Why don't you just email the guy from Machine Head. They're not that popular anymore so they'll probably respond. I did love them when they opened for Fear Factory in 2001.

I'm not a fan of beards on anyone. I'm clean shaven always.

I say don't do it and stick with a goatee. If you really want to, I think you just need some wax. How do you think people curl their mustaches so neatly?

What kind of hair do you have? I work with my beard often enough, so I might be able to help.
