befriending people on the escapist

I only have 3 friends on my profile on the escapist, and for the longest time I didn't have any. One of them is a guy I hang out with on a regular basis but the other two are users on the escapist that I've never met before.

one of them friended me because we have the same last name and I don't quite know why the other one did

so heres my question
if you do, when do you friend people on the escapist?

i dont really use forums to make friends, and vice versa so may as well accept but no point in adding

Usually when I like things people have said, like they make me laugh or I think they've made a good point.

I did befriend three people because they enjoyed the book House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. Any reason is good, I'm yet to block someone.

Has anyone ever done this?

Personally I tend to befriend people if they interest me, either by engaging my interest in a post or just on a whim. There's no science to it. Sometimes it's just people who agree with me. I haven't added anyone in a while though.

Usually people friend me, but I've added a couple of people because of their avatars or because they're attractive or because they've said something interesting

I think the most friends comes from the RP section. If you play forums games together the chances are good that you will be added as a friend or become friends.

Generally people which entertain me and others/have something in common/ seem awesome thats me i guess...im intrested to see why others do! But it does not matter on this site really-not like you can interact much on it...but its a nice gesture to befriend

I only have three friends on The Escapist at the moment, two of whom are people I knew online before I registered, and the other being someone that PM'd me complimenting my avatar, which led to a short exchange about Diskworld. I haven't talked to them since, but I still continue to talk to the other two over MSN as I did before I joined.

Basically, I tend to stick to a "wait until they add me first" policy when it comes to friends on forums. That said, if people do add me, I'll gladly add them back (as long as I have a vague idea of who they are, and I don't despise them or anything).

I add people when I agree with their views or opinions and feel that the person is a genuinely likeable person. Otherwise I'll add those who add me. For the most part it's the former category, rather than the latter.

I'll befriend someone after one of two things happens.

1. They make a point that I strongly agree with, in which case I'll send a PM explaining why I befriended them.
2. I have a good discussion with them which both of us enjoy and doesn't turn into a flamewar.

If they happen to befriend me first, I'll return the favour. However, if someone befriends me whom I've never talked to before, then it's unlikely I'll befriend them.
