I don't mind speaking to me in my native language (german) when they're not native speakers, on the contrary. I think it shows that the person is making an effort to communicate instead of demanding that everybody speak their native language.

Well I lived in Spain for 8 years, and it never offended me if someone assumed (correctly obviously) that I spoke English, and it makes no difference to me what language I speak, as long as the other person feels comfortable using that language too. Now I'm back in Ireland, and I was working in a shop for a while, and if someone came in and I heard them speak Spanish, I would address them in Spanish. From my own personal experience, it is always nice to have someone talk in your own language when you're abroad. I've never had someone assume I spoke a language I don't, but I imagine that could be annoying, yes.

As a man of English descent, it would be quite odd if I was offended by my own mother tongue.

I've actually tried to learn other languages before but for some reason I'm really really bad at it. I guess the biggest problem is I can't remember non-English vocabulary very well at all.

So Je ne parle pas la Francais tres bien, et no hablo Espanol muy Bueno.

I'm too lazy to go look up alt codes.

I know for a fact that many non-english-speaking communities laugh at foreign visitors trying to speak their language. Mostly because it's so damn adorable.
