Does such a thing even exist? The only example that comes to my mind is Jackie and Jenny's thing in "The Darkness".

Well, the problem is the game keeps thinking it's a movie and that it's okay to just declare, "This is your best friend. You like this person. You are going to do this ridiculous and stupid mission for him because you love him." I think Infamous deserves the latest prize for this by having the most obnoxious best friend I've seen in a game in ages.

The best relationships in games work just like they do in real life. I meet the person, I spend time with them, I get to know them. Yorda, Alyx Vance, Jenny from The Darkness, all of these characters are distinguished by the fact that the player spends a lot of time working with them. No presumptions are made about me liking them right off the bat and often you have to work with them for selfish reasons. But by the end of the game, it's hard to not have a soft spot for any of them after they helped you out so many times.

It doesn't have to be a lot of time either. I was pretty intent on putting a bullet in Uncle Paulie's head and all I did was watch a movie with Jenny.

Bah, everyone knows Freeman's a Mute. Lets his Crowbar do all the talking. One day, Alyx runs her mouth too long about the wrong thing and The Combine will find Alyx hanging from a wall with a crowbar through her gob.

The romance plot with Jaheria in Baldur's Gate 2.
Especially if you played through BG1 with the same character.

You've been through so much...and now the romance blooms...

Well the Mass Effect relationships were pretty realistic, the Metal Gear Solid series does a good job of relationships between characters as well.

But i'm going to have to go with KOTOR here. One of the first romance subplots that I actually enjoyed watching.

Metal Gear games must have stepped things up since the second game. Honestly, the tripe between Raiden and his "Girlfriend" made me want to commit serious bodily harm to the nearest person.

Relationships where the characters act like real human beings, and are set under humane circumstances. So... Um... Maybe the Prince and Farah?

Dating sims?

Uh. I think that the relationship between the Exile and Kreia is pretty credible. If we're talking about friendships. If you mean romantic relationships, then the only ones that come to mind are Freeman/Vance and Exile/Visas Marr.

Prince of Persia sands of time has one of the best love stories ever. But my favorite is Final Fantasy 9 when you are in Black mage village and Zidane tells his story to Garnet.

BioWare is pretty good at relationships in games. Most of the other characters don't just become infatuated with you from the get go. You have to respect them and treat them like they really are important before they open up to you.
Then they go to the Dark side and try to kill you! o_o;

But why waste a perfectly good crowbar?

Link and Epona.

1. Link calls for Epona.
2. Epona comes running.
3. Link mounts Epona.
4. Epona starts running again.

Oh, and there's also that feeling I get whenever I play Ocarina of Time. That somehow, Epona is my only friend and we're so alone without each other... *cries*

--Xvito, keeping it excellent.
