For any particular type of music?

Example - the greatest heavy metal album ever, in my opinion, has to be Metallica's Master of Puppets, closely followed by Ride the Lightning.

J'ai agree.

And does this include compilations & best of albums?

I'd also like to suggest American Psycho by The Misfits.

Follow the Reaper by Children of Bodom.
Every song on there is a masterpiece.

A close second is Black Stone Cherry's self titled album, every song on that one kicks ass too.

Me too.

Oh, and S&M has the versions of One and Master of Puppets with an orchestra behind them, so S&M.

There's no such thing as a best album ever as music is subjective, there are only favourites.
Mine at the moment is "Machina, the machines of god" by The smashing pumkins.

Hmm... Thirteenth Step by A Perfect Circle, may be?
Revolver by The Haunted.
Young Team by Mogwai.
Beautiful Garbage by Garbage.
Americana by The Offspring.
Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins.
Lullaby's to Paralyze by Queens of the Stone Age.

Those are only a few of mine (I have so many favourite albums). Smiling Kitsune was right about being subjective. It's all a matter of taste.
