Cheers for all that! It seems to me that polonium rounds are the best so but whether or not I like em because they fire green goo!

Probably not the worst ever, but right now I'm pissed at the combat in the new prince of persia. It sucks, either that or I just can't get the hang of it. I feel like I spend the entire battle blocking instead of actually being able to fight! Grrrr . . . I really enjoy the rest of the game though.
Best combat for me is God of War, I just can't get enough of the chain blades and fun combos. Also the special "o" kills are awesome!
The combat in POP drove me nuts too, it wa totally unfulfilling and based on stupid QTES and counters, you felt underpowered against even the weakest enemies. It was truly lame, and then on top of that you had to fight each boss four times which was about as much fun as repeatedly smacking my head with a brick.
You have quoted me as the author of that post, this is incorrect. The post you quoted belongs to Ridergurl10 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/Ridergurl10]
I suppose this was a misunderstanding but I just wanted to make things clear.

Good thing I wasn't in the middle of an argument when that happened ;)
It's cool, everyone makes mistakes.

Makes us human and all that.

Mass Effect has combat better than Gears of War.
You are a brave brave man :D
Okay, you can put it that way if you want...
LOL I was merely implying that a few regulars may disagree strongly but actually I seem to have been proven wrong!
How so?
In the way that a few people feel mass Effect has stronger combat than Gears.

As for me I love them both but prefer the meaty leadslinging in Gears, it just feels more satisfying.
I agree, but if you ask me, the two systems are quite different. The cover systems aren't even close to similar in the way they are enacted. and the entire ability to customize the effects of your weapons makes it too different to accurately compare. And the Mass Effect combat feels... I don't know... choppy is as close to it as I could describe.
That was such a huge flaw in ME I mean what a stunning looking game but the frame rate slowdown turned simply walking around the citadel into being at a nineties strobe filled rave up...
Well I don't mean the frame rate... it was something about the combat... I just don't know exactly what word to use to describe it.
Well the framerate certainly did make it choppy... especially when you started using powers and blowing Geth up...

Maybe the word I would use to describe ME's combat is... babysitting. As in, repeatedly reviving your downed squad members :D

Role-Playing Games:
Chrono Cross
Chrono Trigger
Diablo & Diablo II
Fallout & Fallout 2
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
Final Fantasy IV & VI
Baldur's Gate II
Icewind Dale
Star Controll II
Phantasy Star IV End of the Millennium
Betrayal at Krondor
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Neverwinter Nights
BLASPHEMY!!!

You have not posted Mass Effect on the list of roleplaying games.
And considering some of the games you did put up there, there's no other way to put this:

THIS IS MADNESS!!!

If you think you're constantly blocking, I recommend letting go of the block button and trying to counter. But DO make sure to counter with an acrobatic or Elika attack. The enemies like to block your sword attacks, and the gauntlet is a bad idea for a combo starter. Try Elika-Sword-Elika-Gauntlet-Acrobatic-Elika-Elika.

Oh, and on-topic, best combat is definitely Shadow of Rome. Even more violent that God of War.

Oh man, I forgotten about Mass Effect. I'll edit it right away.
I'd argue that Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines should be on that list too, but it was in need of serious patching before one could play through it without hassle.

Up to you, It's your list after all.

But Mass Effect is obligatory to have on any "best of roleplaying games" list. It's a law or something.

I forgot to mention Prey. Each gun you aquired felt even lamer and less powerfulthan the last and none of them were accurate or fun to use.
Ah, Prey. The only game I've ever purchased that I gave up on a couple of hours in and never looked at again because it was so shit. The combat was a big part of that- you'd have been better flicking peas at the gravity-defying hordes than using the resident glowy Nerf pistols. Jedi Knight 2 and Klingon Honour Guard (remember them?) are also worth mentioning because they both committed the cardinal sin of forcing you to use a melee weapon all the time (lightsaber and bat'leth respectively) because none of the ranged weapons could ever hit anything.

The best combat system? I actually enjoy the modding frenzy that is KOTOR 2, but I think I give this one to Bioshock. I admit to never having played God of War though it does sound like my kind of thing, but there's something about welding a Splicer to the spot with lightning or even Covering Them In Bees then switching to the more traditional weaponry and sticking a crossbow bolt between their mutated eyes. It has a really good weapon balance and the plasmids are just the icing on the cake of unrelenting violence.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely try it out!

It is similar to Prince of Persia in that it feels that sapping the fun out of the combat by making your character horribly underpowered is made up for by not being able to really die. But that just makes the player feel annoyed as they keep getting knocked out and have to shoot those stupid bird thingys/get thier ass repeatedly saved by Elika. It's not empowering.

Be thankful you gave up, I beat it out of stubbornness and it gets NO BETTER, in fact when you get to the shuttle flying levels it descends into one of the worst gaming sequences I've had the mispleasure of 'playing'.

best...halo was good and GoW 2 and RES 4 was sweet.

worst...urr I hate the old jrpg thing where combatants stand there and take it in turns running six meters hitting an enemy with a sword and running back to their original position just looks silly to me and kills the immersion factor
