So, yeah, my first 'smart phone' and I'm looking for apps that:
1) Don't cost an insane amount of money
&
2) Are useful/fun.

One thing, I won't be 'rooting' it or whatever, so any apps that need that are kind of off my radar.

Thanks for any help provided.

There is an app which you and your girlfriend can get which will tell you at what stage her period is, how likely she is to get pregnant, and how to make her feel better and what the hormones are doing to her.

China can be a pretty strange place. It's called 大姨吗.

AndrOpen Office - Port of OpenOffice to Android. Works better with mouse and keyboard but good enough for viewing files on the go.
Dolphin - Preferred browser, mostly because it supports flash and has a Chrome plugin to sync bookmarks and push links.
ES File Explorer - Pretty good file browser with support for network shares.
iSyncr - Sync iTunes library/playlists with phone over USB or WiFi.
MX Player Pro - Video player with lots of built-in codec support (though requires AAC audio plugin to be downloaded separately because licencing). Also good for podcasts since it can remember your place. Has free ad supported version.
Perfect Viewer - Good for reading comics in a variety of formats.
Smart Tools - A bunch of useful measuring tools that use your phones sensors and camera.
Sygic - Pricey but it's the best GPS app available. Maps are pretty detailed and work without an internet connection.
Viral Pro - Alternative to the default YouTube player. Supports playing in background and with screen off (good for podcasts), audio only streaming, and making playlists on the fly. Has free ad supported version.

I would recommend the app Connection Stabilizer Booster. I notice the internet connection likes to hang a lot and d/c and this helps to deal with that. It was maddening trying to use the internet on my phone without this app. I was especially having issues with Youtube.

SquareEnix has great ports of their games for Android. I currently own Final Fantasy 3, 4, and 6 along with The World Ends With You. Great games that work perfect on my Galaxy S5.
