I will admit that I came into this expecting nobody to mention Lt Commander Data. I am quite pleased to have been wrong.

Too often artificial intelligence is presented as a cautionary tale. AIs will always turn on us, we are told. Treating one with anything but the utmost reverence is doomed to end in the extinction of the human race or something equally odd. Amidst this type of thinking, it is heartening to get constructs like Data and EDI; machines that we built and do not really have a use for. Stories involving these types of AIs are equal parts them figuring out where they stand in our world and us figuring out where they stand in our world.

That sort of thing always gets my vote.

Chamber from Gargantia, a recent somewhat lacking anime series with some nice characters, Chamber being one of them.

No love for Cortana yet? Seriously? Okay, well, Cortana is my vote. She's the most human aspect of the Halo games.

I was surprised she wasn't on the first page. I felt they overplayed her in Halo 3, but I still fondly remember her characterization in the novels.

Do transformers count? I mean they are robots with intelligence, but depending on the continuity they have different origins. And even if you follow the continuity in which they were created by another race, they've evolved so much that could they really be considered artificial....Wait....By that logic the Geth might evolve past AI in couple thousand years.....I think I just blew my own mind.

The first one stayed with Leela on Gallifrey, while the second stayed with Romana in E-Space. He later appeared in a Mark 3 with Sarah Jane Smith which was eventually replaced with a Mark 4 by the tenth Doctor after the events of "School Reunion".

Also, the legendary "oh f*** me!" moment when the core defender comes online is one of the most memorable, he also has an epic evil laugh.
