Area 11 - J-rock themed goodness chock-full of anime references. Although they've got a hell of a lot more coverage ever since they partnered up with the Yogscast, which is how I got to know of them. They currently have an EP out, and are recording their first album.

These are a couple of songs they've put up on YouTube:

The Buzzhorn. I managed to get my hands on a Studio copy of their 'debut' album for a birthday years and years ago, and i loved how they sound. I still listen to the cd every now and again. Hopefully they come back soon

The Bangups!
Not only is their music good, but their live act is extremely entertaining

Speaking of that particular venue and underrated bands, a couple months prior to that I saw Mindless Self Indulgence live. It was wild.
Extremely jealous, I'm not usually one for that style of music, but MSI is fantastic

Since it would be tacky as all hell to plug my own band lol. I'm going with "Stolen Babies" out of LA. They just released a new album and are touring with Devin Townsend but no one I talk to knows who they are.
it would be tacky as hell to use your own band XD

Garbage is the one band I could listen to for the rest of my life.
I wouldn't peg garbage as unknown. they're multi-platinum. also Grammy nominated. still a good band though.

One of my favourite bands is Blind Guardian, not many people I've met know them, they have two different styles of song
Their acoustic stuff - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_tORtmKIjE
And their heavy stuff - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbFKtt_Q8Fs

I just returned from my excursion to Canada, and I finally have something to contribute to this thread!
I'm currently listening to a CD I bought from a street musician called Jim Meyer on Granville Island. First time I'd ever seen a Chapman stick, and this dude's playing it like a freakin' boss.

http://www.myspace.com/jim.meyer (I recommend you try that first song, "Ignition".)

If you like those samples, buy Jim's album "Arbutus & Jade" - great music like that deserves support! ^^

Regina Spektor. I found her in an AMV one day, and listened to some of her other stuff. I don't generally like artists, more specific songs they sing, but Regina was something else. Same with The Feeling, but I don't think they're very obscure.

Regina Spektor does have an amaizing voice. but i'd say she's way more famous than The Feeling :)

Really? Wow, I didn't know that. I guess I'm more obscure than I thought.

Neutral Milk Hotel.

I've read that they're popular on some places online, but rarely anyone mentions them in real life. So I guess that makes them obscure.
NMH are basically the hipster holy grail so on online music blogs they're immense but yeah, they're not popular off them.

OT: Most of my favourite music these days is pretty obscure by mainstream standards.. It's stuff I've discovered on music sites, so Burial, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, The Weeknd (kinda obscure) are my top ones although none of them are absolute unknowns, but I've only very occasionally met people who knew who they were. Practically freaked out when I discovered someone in real life who liked GYBE

Years ago when I was feeling sad and lonely, I opened a MySpace page. Now, for those who've fallen prey to this, you'll know that bands have a habit of adding you on there to try and promote themselves and so on so forth.

Most that did it to me were pretty pants, but one I happened to click on instantly captured me - "Dommin".

What the heck, why not post some Sunny Day Real Estate? A 90s emo group. This song isn't really emo mind. But it's good.

It would have to be Midnight Oil for me. Heard them for the first time about 6 or 7 years ago and I still listen to mostly them to this day. So much energy and passion!

The Chariot.
Taking brutal, raw hardcore and shoving it in a blender with a shit-tonne of feedback.
