Well, when I said my last thread was going to be my last Batman thread...

Anyway, I was wondering what the best Batman comic books/graphic novels were to buy that focused on Robin, Batman's sidekick. Preferably, any of the first three. I've been recommended Dark Victory, the sequel to Long Halloween, which I enjoyed. But I've heard that it's not all that different to The Long Halloween. Although I've also heard that, if I liked The Long Halloween, I'll like Dark Victory, and that it answers the question of why "Batman needs a Robin".

And there's A Death in the Family, which featured Jason Todd's death, but apparently, that's the only reason it's famous, and the story is farfetched and not all that good by itself (e.g. the Joker becoming the Iranian ambassador at the UN). But I do kind of want to at least have one of the comics in the mainstream continuity, and apparently, the paperback includes A Lonely Place of Dying too. On Amazon (and presumably, other online places too - I don't want to bid on eBay, though), it's very expensive to get alone and said to be a good book with a compelling story, perhaps primarily because it's the first appearance of Tim Drake, who's considered the best Robin, and, like Dark Victory, answers the question of why "Batman needs a Robin". In lesser or greater detail, I don't know.

I don't have enough money to get both, and I don't know whether or not there are other, potentially better ones. I'm aiming at getting a paperback, since I'm on a budget. So what should I do?

The Batman and Robin comics where Dick Grayson was Batman and Damian was Robin were fantastic at the beginning but began to go downhill.

If you want to read a good comic about an old Robin then read The New 52 Nightwing. Dick Grayson's character has evolved so much and the Owl storyline was fab. Plus, you might want to pick up The Red Hood.

well Dark Victory would have been my immediate suggestion, and A Death In The Family isn't very good overall. You could try Under The Hood, which is more related to wether or not he needs a Robin, but for that you could do with having read ADITF and Hush,(which a chapter or 2 of deals with some Robin stuff).

elements of No Man's Land touch on why he needs or doesn't need Robin, but requires a lot of reading for a small payoff in that dept, and you'll never get it on a budget

or hell if you're game for a laugh you could always try All Star Batman & Robin.

It's a little difficult to suggest Robin stuff as nothing against the character, but a lot of the best Batman Stuff doesn't tend to use him.

But yeah, out of the two, Dark Victory, i very much enjoyed it, and whislt it is very similar to Long Haloween (Loeb/Sale seriel killer stuff), It's a fun book that utilises the rouge's gallery quite well, and features some nice Robin stuff

I really want to read "A death in the Family" simply because I absolutely loved "Batman: Under the Red Hood" and am currently loving "Red Hood and the Outlaws"(What can I say? I've become a Jason fanboy, better than walking around with a shirt saying "I <3 Dick")

Also yes, the Night of the Owls bit in the new 52 was mindblowing.

This. Just don't bother to read past issue 16 (Grant Morrison's last issue).

Death in the Family is extremely meh. It would be completely forgettable if it wasn't for it's big selling point. It's also dated as fuck and it's ending is just plain dumb.
