Good riddance (green day) is really good for a breakup song, or if you dont want to split but shes leaving, "The scientist" By coldplay.
These two, and "She Don't Love Me No More" by The Aliens.

And, of course, the Beatles classic "Yesterday".

normally if I'm feeling depressed/down (due to breakup or otherwise) I stick on some happy sounding music, or something full of energy. recently I've used King Blues; Save the world get the girl. (the album that is, not just that song)

The only one that I remember is Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) by Green Day, and most people don't even think of it as a break-up song. (When it came out, it was the first dance song for people getting married something like 50% of the time.)

"Maps" by Yeah Yeah Yeahs or "Ever Fallen in love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" by Buzzcocks.

They're just personal favorites. You could, alternatively, move to the sound of your own voice screaming, "Well FUCK YOU, YOU *****!". That last one's quite good.

Depends. If it's a sad breakup (either a mutual breakup, or something that neither wanted, but circumstances required):

Fields Of Gold (the lute version) - Sting
Big Bad World One - Jonathan Coulton
What About Everything? - Carbon Leaf
I Don't Have Anything - VAST
Much Too Young - The Good Luck Joes
Most of the Time - Bob Dylan
Make You Smile - +44

Angry (you got dumped):

Bed - Semisonic
Straight to Hell - Gisli
I Don't Like You - Electric Six
Live And Let Die - Guns 'n Roses
4 Walls - Black Light Burns

Happy (you dumped some terrible person):

Jet Airliner - Steve Miller Band (I'm not sure why this works for me, but it does)
Lost Cause - Scapegoat Wax
Typical - Tickle Me Pink
Free - VAST

Holy shit.

Uh, how about the entire 80's rock ballad movement?

Seriously, we're looking at every hair band in the 80's having to include at least one break up song in their album.

Without You & Don't Go Away Mad, Just Go Away - Motley Crue
Every Rose Has Its Thorns - Poison
Love Bites - Def Leppard
Seperate Ways - Journey
You Give Love a Bad Name - Bon Jovi
Love Stinks - J. Giles Band
Goodbye - Night Ranger
Nobody's Fool - Cinderella
Here I Go Again - Whitesnake
Somebody to Love - Queen
November Rain - Guns n Roses

And like 30 other rock ballads of the late 1980's and early 1990's.

Yes, my teenage years were full of angsty break up songs.

I know it is not intended as a break-up song, but Kill Greedy by Lollipop Lust Kill words great. How could you not agree with a chorus that starts "I want you to die"?

Ready aim misfire-New years day.

It was on my ipod after I broke up with my girl friend and it was at that moment I became angry and ran to the other side of town and had to walk home at 8pm....

Buckethead - Soothsayer.
2nd best breakup I ever had.
I love him, my friend recently introduced me to his work.

For me, it's 'This is how you remind me' especially the line, "I said I love you, and I swear I still do."

I also like those power ballads that make you feel better, mainly directed at women.
You and your friend are now the coolest people I have heard of.

I know people say their new album was shit, but this song's pretty damn good if you're in the mood for self-pity.

"I'm Gonna Take These Broken Wings"- sry I can't remember who sings it but its one of those songs everyone knows.
This would be Broken Wings by Mister Mister, classic 80's power ballad.

Oh and someone mentioned "With Or Without You" which is by U2 for the record.
