What do you think is the best example in entertainment media of a subverted character trope? If you don't know what a subverted trope is, it's basically when the work of fiction makes you think a particular trope (a trope is similar to a recurring archetype or cliche in media, btw) is going to happen, but then it doesn't, or it's alternatively twisted.

My favourite character trope subversion is Viper from the Kung Fu Panda films. This is because, usually, snake characters in fiction are depicted as evil or otherwise unsavoury characters. For me, especially so, as I'm terrified of snakes. The difference with Viper, voiced by the lovely Lucy Liu, is that both her appearance and personality is so endearing that it's a perfect contrast to this trope. In a group of martial artists that consist of a tiger, a monkey, a mantis, and a crane, it is the viper who is the most beautiful and sweetest of the lot. It is because of this that she's become my favourite Kung Fu Panda character.

Judge Anderson from the fairly recent Dredd film.

The corrupt Judges come in and start hunting for Dredd and Anderson. They try and catch them off guard by pretending to be back-up as it's much easier than an open fight.

One of them approaches Anderson trying to pretend to be on her side. Normally in a film she'd fall for it only to be betrayed later. But Anderson is psychic so she reads the Judges mind, sees their real intention and instantly shoots them.

Even with the mind reading part, normally a film would try and have some cliché "Why are you doing this?!" conversation, so the fact that she just does the smart and practical thing, rather than the pointlessly dramatic one to create tension was a great moment.

The Group of Four from the Safehold series.

At first it looks like the 'Group of Four' the unoffical name of the men who unoffically rule the Church of God Awaiting are pretty bog standard group of evil incompetent schemers ranging from the puppet master Chancellor Zahmsyn Trynair, the greedy bean counter Treasurer Rhobair Duchairn, the nepotistic General Allayn Magwair and the eeeviilll Grand Inquisitor Zhaspahr Clyntahn.

And for the first few books everything is pretty much following cliche, the Chancellor paves the way in the Vicarate to declare a Holy War against the protagonists, the General fucking up trying to play Admiral then building the wrong type of ships afterwards and the Inquisitor turned a simple impoundment of merchant ships into a massacre.

Then things got interesting.

The Council of Vicars was purged by Inquisitor Clynthan which reduced Trynair to a non-entity.

Rhobair Duchairn found God and started to provide food and shelter to the poor during the harsh winter while providing a 'gentler face' of the church, eventually outright defying the Inquisitor at various points.

And finally General Allayn Magwair who everyone had written off not only comes up with a plan to bring the protagonists to their knees, he realizes that the enemy spies (who in reality are high tech parasite sensors in a world where steam engines have just been invented) are too good and keeps it hidden to everyone and nearly achieving total surprise coming close to victory.

Then when Inquisitor Clynthan instigates a massive uprising in a potential ally of the protagonists without warning he marshals the Army of God and comes close to over-running the country outright, with only the destruction of his logistics train preventing him from achieving total victory. Even then he uses the time to train the million or so mob of peasent levies into an effective fighting machine, push though the design of a rifle that superior to his opponents and generally prove to be the biggest threat for everyone opposing the Group of Four.

Which considering Inquisitor Clynthan started a campaign of suicide terror bombings and starting up concentration camps in the meantime is saying something.

Archangel Schueler, also from the Safehold series

Archangel Schueler survived the Fall and wrote The Book of Schueler in which "Extremism in the pursuit of godliness can never be a sin" is pretty much the order of business and puts down the method of punishing heretics (it takes several hours, designed to keep the heretic alive and conscious through most of it).

Turns out he left a message which was passed down through a prominent Church family, asking them to 'remember Gods love' and 'keep the purpose of God's Church to guide, to cherish, to love...'

Characters are now wondering if he really was the writer of the Book of Schueler.

The princess from Aldnoah-Zero
One of the big blue eyed blonde girl types that one of the main character falls for. Sweet, charming, blonde...

Like she walked out of a shoujo manga.

And god she looked out of place.

Wearing a completely over the top bright dress, coming to Earth on a goodwill mission she might as well have had a halo over her head and butterflies swarming around her because of her purity.

And then just when I think I'm completely fed up with biotch she's nearly killed by the end of the first episode.
I was so happy.
