I have recently gone through a phase where i love listening to comedians. I am looks for some new ones. Here are the ones i have seen.
Louis Black: Very good, very funny
Robin Williams: I need new lungs (Best comedian Ever)
Christopher Titus: Pretty good
Chris Rock: Pretty good, worth a listen
George Carlin: Earlier stuff was good, older stuff was too poisonous
Russel Peters: Actually manages to do the racial stuff very well
John Pinette: Now i'm hungry...
Those are the major ones i have seen. So, what are your favorites, who are they? why are they funny? and do they look really good in leather pants? (don't think to much about the last one, i didn't)

Are we saying living or dead here?

Living: ...I got nothin'.
Dead: Rodney Dangerfield. I give him respect.

Why has no one mentioned the Big Yin, Billy Connolly? The man is a legend and easily my all-time favorite comedian. His stuff in movies isn't paticularly good, but whack him on a stage with a mic and you discover that he's the funniest man in the world.

He's closely followed by Dylan Moran. I'm a big fan of his TV stuff, but his stand-up is a joy to watch.

Paton Oswald is helarious

Brian Posehn is great (Very similar comedy to Oswald)

Stephen Lynch is one of the best current musical comedians.

Gabriel Iglesias is one of my favorite Latino comedians.

Seth Green is an excellent comedic writer, but a mediocre actor.

Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, John Belushi, Tina Fey; Excellent sketch comedians.

Louis C.K. has been doing stand up for 20+ years, and still going strong.

Ricky Gervais; brilliant comedic actor.

So on and so forth.

Are we talking stand-up comedy, or any form in particular? A lot of comedians are extremely funny until you stand them on a stage with a mic and they fall apart.

At the moment I'd say Ed Byrne is my favourite. The man's a genius.

the thing is that comedians, comedy in general, has a lot to do with nationalities... I could name a ton that you won't probably know, but an "international" one that I consider to be really good is Will Ferrel

My favorite is George Carlin.
But I also have to give big props to Louis Black, Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, and Eddie Izzard.
