Something i have always enjoyed is the gradual progression of leveling and my favorite type of game for this is dungeon crawlers. But which one is best? Personally i would say either Diablo 2 or Baldur's Gate.

Demon's Souls is the best at the moment, but Persona 3 Portable is following closely behind.

ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Cartridge for the Intellivision.

Yes, TSR did insist on all caps and the word cartridge in the title.

Demon's Souls. It was great fun, although not quite as challenging as everyone told me it was going to be. Still great fun, though.

I don't think I'd call the BG series a dungeon crawler. Sure there are dungeons in it, but you certainly aren't crawling through them for the express purpose of a shiny pointed stick. If we are counting that, I'd say BG2.

My favorite true dungeon crawler is Titan's Quest: Immortal Throne. Greek mythology, excellent graphics, a vast array of possible character builds, and a huge modding community amount to one great game. Just wish the first act wasn't such a chore.

I can honestly say that my favorite dungeon crawler-type game would be the .Hack series. Even the first quartet was addictive as hell, for as shallow as the combat was. Something about the music and atmosphere made me want to play it all the time, even now.

I actually tried to get the demo of titan quest on steam and it kept giving me some virtual memory error. I did not want to get the game then at risk of that happening with the full version =P

Dungeon Siege was a pretty good one.

Would Alien Swarm count? Or is it closer to Contra maybe?

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. Great atmosphere, challenging battles all backed with a solid, fairly open plot. Plus some of the coolest visuals on PS2.

Dungeon Keeper 2. You get to build the dungeon, AND possess creatures and crawl around it.

What comes straight to mind is Diablo, the classic.

What comes next is Titan Quest, so much fun with a bunch of friends.

It'll be a tie between those two.

Wizardry IV.

I still haven't beaten it, but damned if I'm going to cheat or follow a walkthrough to do it.

Definitely Diablo 2, with friends, with the Chaos mod on.

I've spent hours combing those random-generated fields of loot and terror!

Alien Swarm would generally not be called a Dungenon Crawler. Dungeon Siege on the other hand is the Dungeon Crawl distilled to a very pure form. There isn't a lot of depth to the game but there is plenty of crawling through dungeons of various sorts.

If Persona 3 counts, then that. Of course it's so much more than a dungeon crawler that I hesitate to qualify it as such, but perhaps it's because it's more than one thing that I like it so much.
