Best final fantasy after 8?

X by far due to having an actual coherent plot and a great battle system.

IX is just kinda...okay. There's nothing broken about it like VIII, but it's all just kinda average. A story with tons of issues and a battle system that doesn't do anything interesting.

XII is BAD, mostly due to a boring narrative and a combat system that is a complete mess. It's pretty with a neat world to explore, but that's it.

XIII is called the corridor game for a reason. Combine it with terrible characters and a dull battle system and you've basically got a crappy tech demo instead of a game. So, yeah, ya really only have to hit X.

Either IX or X. I'd personally go with X because it's flat-out amazing (and I haven't gotten around to finishing IX yet...after three years...but still, I've really enjoyed what I've played of it), but it divulges from what was the prevalent Final Fantasy formula at the time, so it might not be what you want from one. On the other hand though, you might fall in love with it, as I did. Instead of the (by that point) traditional ATB system, Final Fantasy X goes pure turn-based combat. As a result, it's got a lot more of a strategic element to it than past titles, which I think is a welcome change. Probably one of my favourite things about it is that you can switch in any member of your party at any time during battle, so it's easy to keep your whole team well trained. And you will need all of them...well, except Kimahri maybe. My sister and I have a running joke about just keeping him around to watch him die, after one time when I switched him into battle in the Thunder Plains only to have an Evil Eye confuse Kimahri and cause him to literally kill himself in one turn.

However, the main reason to play X would be to enjoy the story. I would say it's one of the best stories, and probably the best love story, that I've experienced in a video game. It's also a beautiful game, especially the new HD release, if laughably animated. But I find that to be part of the charm. :D

You can't go wrong with either of those games though. Just do yourself a favour and stay far away from Final Fantasy XIII.

I just replayed 6...wow that's an epic game. I completed them all up to 8 when I was younger but lost interest after that... But now I would like to play just one of the games following 8 to see what story lines they came up with.

So, for you ff fans out there I was wondering...which is the best in your opinion? Please give me some reasons as well so I can make an informed decision as to which one I would most enjoy playing.

Ps...I only want to do one...they take long enough.

Thanks. :)
Anywhere between VI and IX.
VII, VIII and IX are my favourites. Haven't played VI, but I've only ever heard good things.

Oh man 6 is my fav by far. The story is just so brilliant. It's much more fast paced than a lot of the others. You can get it for mobile device now too. :)

They're all pretty different after that.

IX and X are good. Haven't played XII. XIII is absolute trash.

+1 vote for FF IX

Ive got fond memories of FFX as the last final fantasy game I enjoyed but FFIX was the high point of the series for me and has possibly the best OST in my humble opinion (possibly cos I haven't played any FF after FFXII).

X easily takes it IX is ok but the combat is really bad in that game and I didnt care much for the chibi like character art style.

Stay away from XII. Far, far away. That game is the worst in the series in my opinion. It tore out everything that makes a Final Fantasy a Final Fantasy game. I would even suggest XIII before trying to play XII.
Agree totally except I believe FFII to be the worst in the series at least XII wasnt completely busted and had nice end game content if you wanted also the story and characters were better in XII as well as the combat and XII had a horrid, story, characters and combat imo.

Really? I found FFI to be one of then most fun and replayable games in the series. Probably because there's no story so it's really easy to pick up and play without too much investment. Unless you're specifically talking about the NES version which is pretty much broken.

An easy question, IX. Its not just the best final fantasy after 8 though, its the best final fantasy period.

Well that makes crossing FF13 off the list pretty easy. For one: it's terrible. But beyond that you would need to buy 3 different games to play through the whole story...and each game gets crappier than the last.

Anyways, I'm here to offer a cynic's perspective...the views of someone who fell out of love with the series a long time ago.

Ahem...

FF9: A cartoony romp (complete with a Super Saiyajin for a main characters) with protagonists who appear to be about 11 years old. I probably should like this game more seeing as how it's a throw-back to the classic FF's that I grew up with in that it actually takes place in a "traditional" FF setting (vs the new sci-fi-fantasy that a lot of the more modern FF's are going with), however the plot was so utterly boring that I couldn't be arsed to play beyond the first disc.

FF10: Not terrible, though the plot is absolutely atrocious and the main character should go down as one of the greatest crimes against good writing in history. Seriously, Tidus is a horrible main character who arguably isn't even the rightful main character to the story. Most annoyingly he's a winy little brat who keeps insisting that it's his way or the highway! Forgetting the fact that in the context of the story he essentially is just a random jackass the actual group picked up because he's good at physics-defying under-water soccer.

Said underwater soccer mini-game was an interesting diversion, to be fair, until you realize how obscenely easy it can be.

FF10-2: Crappy animations for the characters, horrific story, and an all-female cast, this is a Final Fantasy quite literally built around fan-service. "Watch two of your favorite teenage heroines and one random emo chick play dress up as you.......click dots on a map to get teleported to a "dungeon" to clear! Change job-costumes for even more fanservice!!!"

The game does have one hell of a good music video buried within it...though the concert takes place in the most ridiculous area imaginable: "Hey! I know! Lets gather as many people as we can and pack them into THE THUNDER PLAINS! An area where lightning is striking constantly!" Seriously...what the fuck? That had to be the most obscenely stupid idea that has ever been considered in a game. Still, the sequence was a beautiful cinematic and song.

Other than 13, I can't really speak for the rest. 13 is almost universally hated everywhere but in Japan, and somewhere in there there's two MMO's that you don't have to worry about.

My recommendation: stick with the classics, it's far better than the tripe that they're trotting out these days. But as a disclaimer: this is coming from someone who grew up playing the classics when they were new games, and as such with each new game I've watched as Square has trampled upon and ground the series I loved so much into a nasty, poorly-written mess that I want no part of. That's why I haven't played an FF game since FF10-2.

After 8? 9 wasn't terrible... just silly. Beyond that... no. Just no. The focus on graphical fidelity and spectacle cutscenes was bad enough... the voice acting conceit was beyond the pale. Un.fucking.playable.

Although technically the remake of Final Fantasy Tactics came after 8, so if you never played the original and own something capable of playing PSP discs...

Final Fantasy 9 is pretty good.

Final Fantasy 10 was the best.

Final Fantasy 10-2 was a game that felt like a manga. But it's a cute, happy manga. So that's nice.

EDIT: I forgot this one, because it's such a boring game. Final Fantasy 12 is the worst one for me, because it's so bland I literally forgot it existed as I wrote this post.

Final Fantasy XIII was a fantastic game that they should have called anything other than FInal Fantasy.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 fixed all the problems I had with XIII.

Final Fantasy XIII-3: LR was the game that finally broke me off Final Fantasy, and FFXV is going to be the first Final Fantasy I will regard with a mixture of "meh" and "please, no."

I'm a bit torn. FFIX is amazing. The story, the characters and the environments are all great. The combat system is kind of meh, but it works. I really loved playing it as a kid.
On the other hand FFX is hands down my favorite in the entire series. It was my first PS2 game, my first game with proper voice acting and my first game with awesome graphics. I was blown away by the game and I guess it might've clouded my judgement. The story is quite good and some of the characters are great(really don't care for Tidus and Rikku), but the thing that does make it my favorite is the combat system. I really loved how each character has a specific use, how you could switch them however you wanted and that you could plan the battle ahead. Downside is that you have to let every characters get a blow in so they'll get exp. Makes the fights go on for way longer than they should.

IX is quite fantasy oriented, so if you want more of the FFI-V styled games I'd recomend that one. If you want a game that's more modern and, I guess, has a more adult story I'd say FFX. Nothing past FFX is worth playing imo.

Ah, FF8 remains my favorite. That and Legend of Dragoon started my JRPG career! I enjoyed FF9, though it wasn't quite as compelling to me as I wanted. Don't let the art design fool you, it is a solidly fun game.

Objectively, I suppose I would have to say FF12, but by then, the graphics were a deal breaker. I dunno how, but FFX ages better. Still, storywise, 12 is great (and deserving an HD remake).

Never cared for FFX though, and 13 was murder ("Really! If you can get past the first 30 hours, it really becomes fun!" Whatever...). As such, I didn't care for the sequels to these two FF's. In fact, that they got sequels, when there were better projects to pursue, is further insult. Not really a fan of MMO's in general (a few F2P's interest me occasionally), so those FF's can go straight to hell...

Can I go with this?

TC, the only FF game I could recommend after 8 is FFX and since that seems to be getting mixed responses in this thread I can't say for sure if you will actually like it or not.
This little bastard though, Legend of Dragoon is simply amazing, a combat system you haven't seen before (It's kind of similar to Lost Odyssey) a great story and great characters.
It is The game that got me into the genre in the first place, I probably wouldn't have even played FF7 if I didn't play this.

It's a PS1 game and you can get it on the PS3 store if you live in the US or have an American account.

Have to say the series died with me once it left playstation 1, I didn't like X and it killed any chance of me buying any more. my fave was IX, and while VII was decent its over-hyped by a single scene.
