Before I start bonus points for not putting Team Fortress 2 or Counter Strike before reading any of this. Now then I read a lot of comments talking about searching for the "Goldeneye" of the PC. Trying to find some game that can equal that. I can't speak for Goldeneye on account of not playing it but I do like shooters and I'm (obviously) not alone on this. So what are some candidates for that title? For being worthy of being called one of the best shooters on the PC? Also if possible see if we can keep it within being easy to purchase like from a digital distrubution service. Feel free to post TF2 and CS now.

EDIT: Ugh sometimes I hate what I write. Well for my own personal preference can there be some recommendations for good single player?
EDIT2: Holy crap I can't believe I remember this one but on the dreamcast I played a demo for a game called Fur Fighters. I loved that demo and wish I got the game for it. I just found out it was also on the PC and PS2. I really should go get a version of that soon.

So like old-school classic shooter? Does Mechwarrior 2 count? It's technically a mech sim, but you're in a first person perspective and you certainly shoot things. I've got goldeneye levels of nostalgia for that one.

Also, Doom.

Mostly just whatever holds up in your mind as one of the greatest of the genre. Personally I doubt I would like the old school shooter since people keep saying Painkiller is a great throwback to old school and I don't really like Painkiller.

Good singleplayer?

Get the Half-Life 1 Anthology on Steam. It's like $15, I think Opposing Force is well worth the time and price alone, plus you have the extensive library of mods (Sven Coop, Afraid of Monsters)
Call of Duty, sue me, still has some really fun singleplayer. I just got off of replaying a bit of Call of Duty 2, in fact.
Dues Ex, I don't care which one.
Any Bethesda game.
Mass Effect series (the shooting is kinda screwy and boring TBH)
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, iffin you like scary games mixed with mystery and a pretty good story.

If you are asking about multiplayer shooters then Quake Live which is the continuation of the Quake games which were the main PC MP FPS before Goldeneye.

Legendary single player campaign, right there. Make sure you get the expansion Resistance though too.

If you have a pc that could run Arma2 well, I heard they were working on recreating the OFP campaign in the Arma 2 engine. Don't know if it's completed or not, or what the deal with it is, as my pc can't even run that damn game smoothly.
Well I tried running the Arma 2 demo they have but I think a bug happened since I have 2 GTX 560 Ti cards and a i7 2600k so I tried to turn it to max. I seriously doubt that was max settings since it just looked terrible.

The Arma2 demo is not a good representation of how the actual game will run/look. The demo runs fine for me, but the actual game doesn't.

Anyway the single player campaign for OFP:CWC and Resistance blows Arma 2's away. The only reason I mentioned Arma 2 is because of that project that supposedly recreates the original OFP. (being as how you mentioned you were looking for a good single player campaign)
Oh I know you mentioned Arma 2 because of the recreation project so thanks for your recommendation. Also for that tip about the demo.

Quake (2 and 3, haven't played 1). Quake 2 I've had the most fun multiplayer experience. It's just great. Quake 3 is also awesome but for some reason I like 2 more.

Unreal Tournament - I still love the first one. Again, amazing multiplayer experience. This would be in top 3 for multiplayer shooters for me. It's battling Quake 3 for the second place.

I don't know how easy to obtain these are.

But also, you have Half-Life which has a truckload of mods (pretty almost all for free) to make it more awesome. And I am led to believe the tendency continues with HL2. Get HL now. Or you can wait until it's cheaper than chips (I'd assume there would be a summer sale soon on Steam). Right now it costs as much as chips so go with whatever you feel better. And get Opposing Force. It's half the price of HL, so it is legitimately cheaper than chips. It can only go down in price and I don't know how would I call it. But let's see which mods I remember - there was Action Half-Life, there was The Specialist, there was Natural Selection (which was really awesome) and Fire Arms (it was my favourite one).

I think the quake games are on Steam and the Unreal games are on GOG so there's that. Also I own all of the Half Life games already. Got them on a Christmas sale a couple years back.

Yes, you are correct - I just checked. I didn't know UT was on GOG. I had seen Unreal there but I've missed Unreal Tournament. I still have my old copy, so I'm excused. And now that you mentioned it, I remembered quake is on Steam. All of them, which is impressing.

So if you feel like playing great FPS games, you know where to look for them. well, maybe Q2 might look a bit dated but the others are still quite all right, if you ask me. In fact, I'll now go and have a quick match in UT.
