I'm big into Mabinogi these days. It's really weirdly balanced, but it's a whole heck of a lot of fun to play with friends. The experience of fighting your way through a tough dungeon that you're about twenty levels shy of being prepared for, then huddling around a campfire for home-cooked snacks and stories before the climatic boss battle in which everyone is likely to be killed can't be beat in my opinion.
Unpredictable downtime, abusive power mad GM's, risk of viruses and keyloggers(alot ask you to use their "launcher"), laggy (in comparison to blizz servers), half the skills won't work properly (notably Shaman totems and all pets - completely broken), Over the top gear that renders grouping (an important aspect of any MMO - why group when you can easily solo?) pointless, also, it's very very hard to get decent gear on those servers unless you "donate" for "vip gear", the community is non-existant due to very low populations on the servers, some skills have been broken so much that they are absurdly over powered, meaning that around 60-70% of a server will be 1-2 classes (whoevers more OP - seriously, go on any private server and count the amount of paladins and rogues) Auction Houses are either broken, or non existant, Quests are pointless (is most cases, replaced with Korean MMO style grind fests).Debatra said:

I got asked once by a level 17 why he was doing such low damage, after asking him to explain himself, he let it slip that "on the private server I played on, I did like 100k per hit". He had no skills in his skillbar , nor spent talent points, or anything like that. Private servers are the foundation of a very bad player, mainly because they're NOTHING like the real game.

Private servers are perfectly legal AS LONG AS the owner isn't making any money from it - if you were to pirate the game then play on a private server then thats a different question.
However I don't see why you would want to because they are reknowned for being majorly glitchty xD
