Awesome Freeware games that will steal your life:

Dwarf Fortress - you control dwarves and build a fortress, and die (you may be confused at first, and not understand anything, but this graphics mod [http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php] and this wiki [http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page] will be your friends)
Nethack - You create a character and explore a huge dungeon, and die.
Infiniminer - You're supposed to find the most gold and be richer than the other team, but sandbox mode is more fun: build and explore (fun, but not enough players anymore, so kinda lacking)
Toribash - wierd fight sim (I never got into it, as I didn't really want to play online and get my ass handed to me constantly, but it was pretty fun)
Torus Trooper - you fly down a tube, shooting and dodgeing enemies (I dl'd this forever ago. I have no idea if it's changed since)
Strange Adventures in Infinite Space - you pilot a ship, and go to planets that each have stuff on them, and gather as much as you can (really short, but fairly replayable)
Clonk - You control these things that will build stuff for you and dig and I think I'm missing something about the game, yet it's still fun.

That's just what I got off the top of my head. I could list all the freeware shooters and MMO's on top of that, but they generally aren't as good. I'd also count flash games, but then the list would never end.

Gang Garrison 2 kicks rear.
THIS! Gang Garrison 2 is pretty much the next best thing to the real TF2. It's surprising how well the gameplay translates...

8-Bit Killer [http://www.locomalito.com/juegos_8bit_killer.php] -- A Wolfenstine 3D-style FPS designed to look, sound, and feel like an NES game.
Echoes [http://www.binaryzoo.com/games/echoes/index.htm] -- An extremely addictive cross between Geometry Wars and Asteroids, all wrapped up in a LSD-like visual package.
Cave Story [http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/downloads_1.php] -- I really don't need to explain this one, just download it. You'll thank me later.
Trackmania Nations Forever [http://www.trackmania.com/index.php?rub=nations] -- All of the online fun of the Trackmainia games in a convenient free package.
Xops [http://xoperations.freehostia.com/] -- A free psudo-tactical FPS with both online and offline gameplay. Very basic graphics, but a fun little pick up and play FPS that won't leave a huge footprint on your hard drive.
YSFlight [http://homepage3.nifty.com/ysflight/aircraftsoft/aircraftsofte.html] -- A flightsim with simplistic graphics, yet is also quite fun especially if you are into flight games. Offers online play that works great even on 56K (I can say that from past experience).

This is a good thread. All the innovation and most of the fun of PC gaming comes from the wealth of freeware and indie games. There's just...so...much...

Flash games have come a long way too! Try Spooky Girl, anyone that hasn't.

Heh, I always play Engie, Spy or Heavy.

One time I got, like, 82 kills with the Heavy class just standing around and firing at the enemy spawn. I was laughing so hard (my strategy consisted of standing and shooting, but everyone ran right into my bullets.)

I've been playing Bos Wars (I think that's what it is called) and it's pretty good.

Surprised at only one mention of Cave Story. It's an incredible game (although it keeps bluescreening my computer. >_>). N and Toribash are two of my favorites-Toribash especially is just impossible to get tired of. Well, ripping your own head off and then using it to dismember your opponent is rather hard to get bored of.
