IGN recently did an article that features the top 10 game engines ever made and I thought you guys would like to look at it.

While I normally take everything that IGN says with a grain of salt, I actually agree with the majority of the choices, particularly the IW engine and the extremely popular Unreal engine. Although I don't like some of the games that uses these engines (Gears of War), the engine themselves are probably one the best.

i duno, here is something about unreal3's bump mapping that i simply don't like.

Cryengine3 seems interesting, curious how it will look on consoles...

CryEngine seems to be amazing right now.
We have to reserve real comment until we see it, and play it, on consoles, but it looks absolutely stunning.

The CryEngine 2 still looks amazing, but the new one CryEngine 3 (made for the consoles) looks borderline terrible in some places, there's a comparison on youtube somewhere if I want to have a look at it.

Even though it had it's flaws, the Original Operation Flashpoint engine was pretty groundbreaking. The new one used for Arma is..... well it still has flaws.

Feh. The Quake III engine was the best FPS engine ever. Yes, yes, I know it's not technically "this generation", but Quake Live is and it uses the same engine! Haha, bet you didn't see that one coming, did you? Anyway: it looked good, the requirements weren't ridiculously high, it ran fantastically, and loads of great games were built on it. Take a look at the list and judge for yourself.

American McGee's Alice.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.
Jedi Outcast.
Call of Duty.
Star Trek: Elite Force.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

To name but a few. How many other engines have had so many good games built on them? Apart from the fact that the engine plays brilliantly, this is a pretty clear indication, to me at least, that the Q3 engine was the best.

I like the Unreal and Havok engines. They make for some great ragdoll physics fun. The EGO engine in the Colin McRae games is a favorite of mine too. I've never seen prettier dirt.
And last, but not least is the Geo-Mod engine. You can actually blow up buildings, not just a little hole in a wall (BF: BC). They should combine Geo-Mod with Geo Eye (as seen in H.A.W.X, I know it's not an engine)for the next H.A.W.X. game. Maybe your stray missiles will actually count for something while flying over Sao Paulo, Brazil (hehe).

OK, so I just watched the comparison video in HD on Youtube.

Yes, Cry2 (As I'll call it for the sake of this post) does look better in certain areas.
However, I think they were made for different reasons.
Cry2 was made for, and pushes, the PC.
Whereas Cry3 was made for, and pushes, the consoles.

Let's be perfectly honest here: neither the 360 or the PS3 would be able to crank out the Cry2 engine as well as a good gaming rig. Hence the 'why' with Cry 3. It was made to bring Cry2-like looks to the consoles, which would normally not be able to really push it out as well as it should be.

And as an ex-hardcore PC gamer, and current console gamer, that's good news to me.
Because Cry3 still looks very very pretty.
