1. Halo trilogy (I still can't pick a winner here)
2. Bioshock
3. Mass Effect
4. Gears of War 2
5. Portal

That's all I can think of at the top of my head right now.

Picking the best game ever is really a tricky thing. Mostly because every person has a different perception of games that differs over time.

But since you brought up X-Com, yes, that's definitely a contender for best game ever. In my own opinion, the best game would be one that will be played decades after it's release and that attracts fans for different reasons: story, gameplay, design, atmosphere, characters, levels, even grapchis(I still consider that Daggerfall has the best horizont ever and that Settlers 2 looks better than the remake).
A perfectly objective viewpoint to what is the best game ever is completly impossible.

That being said, Anachronox and since fall 2010, Elemental War of Magic.

Maybe the best game could be a game in which no one can see a real problem with. Meaning that it doesn't kick you in the balls when you play it. Can't really think of one.

And "overrated" isn't included in this list of problems.

There is no best game. All games have a small downside and it also depends on personal opinion. Here are my favorites though:

HL2 (and epissodes 1+2) as well as Warcraft 3 (RoC + FT)

You might as well ask "what is the best variety of tree?"
It's a contentious isse, but oak or yew by a long way.

As far as games go, probably San Andreas, or Fallout 3.

I have been gaming for almost 20 years. In that time I have played so many games across so many systems it is hard to pic just one.

I do'nt knwo if I would call it "the best" but the one that really stands out is Shogun: Total War. It was the first game I played on my first PC back in 2000. I could not get over the graphics, the depth and the gameplay. It was a far richer game then any I had played on console. I have never looked at anything other then PC games from that point.

Doom and Half Life 1

Doom because it influenced ALL modern FPS games, and HL1 because it was just amazing in every way

Seriously? "Best game ever", no qualifiers? That's... I have no idea what to say about this thread. Besides, there's already the top 100 games of Escapist thread up, which does the same, only much better.

If I had to choose, out of a subjective point of view, mind you... I still can't. I could put up a top 5 or top 10, but the single best game ever? Impossible.

I believe on the back of Final Fantasy VII it says in quotes, "Quite possibly the greatest game ever made." Does that count? Becaue that's what I'm going with.

Honorable mentions: Legend of Zelda: OoT and Half-Life series.

Goldeneye on 64. Pure win.
Tribes 2
Freespace 2

And several others. In terms of impact on my gaming (having been a gamer for nearly 20 years now), these three rank the highest.

Many other games along the way have left fond memories.

Very hard choice, but I would have to say my favorite (but not the best since there really is no best) is Soul Calibur II, way better than the first one since the first one didn't have Talim, who is the best character ever.

I don't really know why, but I'd probably choose Kingdom Hearts 2.
It's the only game I can remember playing that I actually enjoyed in some degree from beginning to end, on top of mucho el grando replay value.
But it's probably just due to the fact my inner child's going "OMG IT'S MICKEY MOUSE AND DONALD AND GOOFY AND THEY'RE SAVING THE EFFING WORLD THIS IS SO KEWL!!!11!".
Or something like that.

FOR ME, the best game ever is The Legend of Zelda. But from an objective stance I'd have to say Tetris. Tetris is simple, innovative, addicting, and just "perfect."

Halo CE is the best halo to date and best game in my opinion.
You grew emotionally attached to the marines, since they were the only thing to relate to in the whole game. And the way they introduced the flood was probably the best intro for anything in any game I've played to date.
Also I played 343 guilty spark recently when I got my turtle beach's and it is so much more scarier.

1: Halo CE (followed by Reach, H3,H2 ODST)
2: Star wars battle front II
3: Oblivion
4: ME1
5: Half Life 2

Phoeinix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations. A magical lawyer that fights crime with ridiculous anime and blue speed lines in a court of law. Your arguments are invalid.
