I personally loved the Alan Wake sound track. Quite a few others as well that I annoyingly can't think of now... Oh wait I really like Tales of Vesperia's too.

I probably have to go with Baten Kaitos. Motoi Sakuraba is probably my favorite composer, so it's hard to pick from all the games he's done. But Baten Kaitos stands out in my mind as having some of the best brass I've ever heard.

Persona 4's?

I mean that's the only game with a soundtrack on my iPod. With the CD given with the game too.

Now this is a thread for me. I've been into soundtracks for quite a few years now. I own a lot of them on cd as well. I even wrote some soundtracks myself, mainly for flash movies and such.

The best soundtracks are those that are creative, not just good. An example of a good soundtrack would indeed be Shadow of the Colossus. Brilliant orchestral music... it's not very creative however. Epic orchestras go naturally with giant creatures.

A creative and good soundtrack would be Bully by Shawn Lee. Every track is different, yet every track has the same distinctive theme to it. It's instantly recognizable and stupidly catchy. Next to that, it's also excellently composed and quite original. It's more than just mood music.

Also noteworthy is the Assassin's Creed II OST. Simply beautiful. Kyd's work on Hitman was good, but ACII was of better quality than anything I had ever heard before. Again: this surpasses tunes to simply set a certain mood. It lifts the atmosphere of the game to new dimensions instead of just 'being there' to accentuate what is happening.

Not to forget the Mass Effect (not 2, that one was disappointing) soundtrack. Very retro, although at times it's way too cliché and movie sounding.

Ah, thanks for mentioning Alan Wake. Didn't remember it had such a good soundtrack

My favorite would be either Heavy Rain or MGS

These 2 songs are my favorite game songs out there right now

Not the besterest everz, but I currently have stuck in my head that piece of combat music in Lothering in Dragon Age. I think it's the best piece in the game, and it's only in this one location (that becomes inaccessible early in the game).

You mean that one bar brawl fight? Yeah, that theme was awesome, and it was in an extremely minor fight and that was it.

The one outside, where you do the chantry board quests, with the bandits and such. I can't remember if it was in the bar fight too.

I'll give 3 awards out:

Scariest - Tomb Raider (PS1). For some reason when I was younger, hearing the music when the wolves chase Lara was my all time most feared thing.

Liking at the moment - Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the soundtrack is just so fitting for freerunning through Renaissance Rome. I also love the variations of the main soundtrack for emotional scenes.

All time best - Metal Gear Solid. What can I say? Whenever I hear the Gaelic Hymn I get these uncontrollable shivers in my spine which last a good 30 seconds.

Halo Reach
Mass Effect 1& 2
Jurassic Park Operation Genesis
Hitman Blood Money
Assassins's Creed 2
Freedom Fighters
Uncharted
Metal Gear Solid 2

These are my personal favorites off the top of my head. To me, and I'm not very versed in music so take it for what you will, what makes a soundtrack so memorable is theme. A lot of games have great music, but they lack a distinctive theme that gives the score an identity. Blood Money has a couple of motifs that re-appear every so often, but, even though a prominent theme is missing, it's still an amazing score. That's my exception. The rest of these scores have a familiar theme, a recongizable piece that's distinct. If a game soundtrack has a good, memorable theme, then I like it that much more.

I don't think it's the best, but I'm gonna say Bomberman: The Second Attack. I say this because nobody else is gonna mention this game, and the soundtrack is AWESOME.

It's hard to assign a single "best" soundtrack when soundtracks can be good in a lot of different ways. Off the top of my head:

Most apt usage of dynamic music cues within gameplay: Tie between Left4Dead and Prey
Best movie-style orchestral soundtrack (action): Modern Warfare 1
Best movie-style orchestral soundtrack (fantasy): Shadow of the Colossus
Best atmospheric soundtrack: Diablo 1 and 2
Best usage of melodic musical themes: Final Fantasy 6
