The End of Portal.
"The Revelation" in KOTOR.
Master Sun Li's Betrayal in Jade Empire.
Lloyd's demise in Legend of Dragoon. (As well as Rose being "You-know-who")
The end Warthog level in Halo: CE
Mossman's Counter-betrayal in HL2
And
The Nuke scene in COD4.

Some of my favourites.

Strange noone mentioned the Silent Hill series. I personally liked the 4th episode's ending (The Room). Also Penumbra's ending (Black Plague) was excellent. As far as older games are concerned, Undying remains unmatched for its original plot and ending. Pity about Jericho...

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

Once you reach Arsenal Gear the story becomes so amazingly awesome its hard to imagine anything else comparing. Except Portal, but that's obvious.
I NEED SCISSORS! 61!

Truly awesome story. Did you actually sit through the 40-minute Codec call? I did it, and listened.

MGS1 had it's awesome twists as well. The key one was my favourite, however, I absolutely crapped myself the first time I saw the elevator bit. You know:

Snake: How much do you weigh?

Otacon: About 135. But that elevator had a weight limit of 650 pounds.

*Music tempo and urgency rising*

SWEET.
The endings of Metal Gear also have cool cliffhangers when you hear in number 1 for example ocelott on the phone or number 2 when Otacon talks to Snake at the end after the credits.

I like the twist in the Ocarina of Time when you emerge from the Temple of time and find the world all but destroyed. Not the best I've seen (bioshock stands out) but I don't want to repeat what everyone else says.

The CoD4 ending still leaves me in awe from time to time.

That Otacon bit made my blood run cold. I just sat there in a stunned silence. Just, whoa.

Gotta say CoD4 is amazing all the way through but an interactive ending where i get to shoot some russian geezer in the face after hes just executed my entire squad almost gave me sexual satisfaction. But as so many have said said already, and merely to fit in KOTOR best twist since the pretzel

Yeah hes like the patriots have been dead for years
and i think when i first played it i like simoultaniously managed to say with snake
"What the hell"
then after it i was like dude!!!
was a pretty awesome cliffhnger
i think theres going to be so many twists and cliffhangers in meteal gear solid 4
one thats annoying me atm is the trailer when snake puts the gun in his mouth
you just sit there going oh common whats he going to do!!!!!!
but its so good
but in my view i think hel die from foxdie it will be a heroes death after he kills liquid/ocelott and takes down metal gear i think it will be all dramatic and that anyway

How about from Knights of the Old Republic? You're Revan, that was a twist that you really can't see coming. So, since it's "you are really the villian", you'd by definition want to ban it. I find fault with your formula. But, I'm pretty sure we've already had the argument, and know that you disdain JRPGs, so...

for Best Twist, I nominate KOTOR (the first one).
Yes you bloody could! It's hinted at constantly up to the point you're told : P I guessed it at Dantooine, although I wasn't sure then ~~

I'm not saying it's a bad twist, it's a bloody good one, but for me it was too obvious. Still, a good plot twist isn't just something random that suddenly appears. A good plot twist is when you either just sit there with your jaw dropped, or where you slap your forehead and yell "OF COURSE!" ^^

Torment is full of twists, so as a whole that game deserves a nomination, while NWN2 deserves a slap in the face. Oh, so the villain is an evil dude? Great writing there ~~

For best ending... Well, the first I come to think of is FF8, because of how the ending can be interpreted in many different ways, but my gaming history is severely lacking so there's probably something much better out there ^^

damnit sum1 already said Shadow of the colossus, that ending was great, certainly by no means expected (the whole games an epilogue to ICO!!! =O)|
And sum1 mentioned System Shock2? also an excellent twist =D

Hitman: Blood money and BioShock. The end might have been predictable in BioShock, but it hit me like sunshine in the morning... And Hitman:BM has one of the most fantastic end, it took me quite a while to figure out what the "real" ending was.

you expect to die, you don't expect to get back up and shoot everybody.
Definitely one of my favourites.

Best twist: Bring on the flames, but I thought the twist in FFX was well done.
Hah! Final Fantasy X was a game full of twists, and not just 'OMFG THAT GUI IS DA BAD GUY!' ones either (which I believe are prevalent in the rest of the series?). Instead, it fills us with exceedingly smart turns in the plot; which are not only very clever at getting the player more interested, but also do not suffer the whole 'isn't that an obvious hole?!' reaction, either.

Halo has a cliche'd storyline. Only guy on earth who can save the day against mutants by blowing stuff up? There's no twist there.
MGS has an overly complicated storyline. Just because something is complicated, it doesn't mean it's good or deep or whatever, it just means someone wants to pull something out of his ass but doesn't know what yet. I don't see any good twists or ending there either.
Also, tragic twists (as in, everyone dies in the end or there's no happy ending), dont necesarily make it a GOOD ending, just a different one. Torment and Terranigma get bonus points for doing it with Japanese it-had-to-happen stuff, but still have very crappy endings compared to what could've been done.
I think the best twist I've seen has to be in Earthbound. You know the game is weird and all, but the tone set for the beggining is totally wiped out by the end. It's one of those things that is creepy, yet so fulfilling.
Needless to say, I dislike games that end up with tragic stuff just because "reality is tragic". That's just a way of saying they didn't spend the time to give something that could make you feel "yeah, this is it."

Why do you lump Torment together with Terranigma? Torment has alternate endings etc : /

Once again with FFX, the twist as to what Sin is was visible from a mile off. The dream bit wasn't though. Either I completely missed something or they don't hint at it at all before they come out and just tell you.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

It's kind of an older game but I still remember being a little shocked when the end cut-scene played...

I played through this one 3 different times, saved before the ending section and played it different ways and still had this jaw-drop at the end...

I was referring to the dream bit, and the whole story behind Auron.
