Final Fantasy VII. I played it upon its release, got annihilated by the first boss because of the stupid translation error, and called it shit. Went back a few months later. My life would never be the same again.

I did not like Twilight Princess at first. I put it down for a few weeks, and upon playing it again, I was ABSORBED!! The game was impeccably designed. I didn't enjoy my playthrough of Skyward Sword; maybe I need to give that a second chance...

Morrowind. I got it when I was younger, like, a lot younger, for the original Xbox, and within an hour I had spent all my money on riding the Silt Striders from town to town. I remember getting scared because I thought everyone was a Vampire, but they were really just Dark Elves. But then I came back after getting oblivion a few years later and loved it.

Just curious, when's the best time to take out a life insurance policy on Aerith?
do you mean when to expect that something bad might happen to her?... City of the Ancients is a little bit dangerous, other than that Aeris will be fine.... :)

League of Legends. I didn't really understand the entire tutorial, and I wound up picking a champion in my first actual game without even knowing who they all were and what they specialised in. Anyway, I kind of got destroyed, and not just as a part of the team - personally, I did an absolutely terrible job. I dropped the game for about two weeks before getting back in just recently - and now that I've finally gotten a handle on the game, I think it's epic.

(Mostly because I haven't run into the people who give it the 'worst community ever' rep.)

That's... actually not what I was asking. I was making a joke. Humor. Apparently FAILED humor on my part. Probably should have followed it with a :).

I pray that you continue not to run into those people. They are not pleasant creatures. They'd rather the human race not enjoy anything, ever, if the behavior I've put up with is anything to go by.

In any case, my game-that-I-gave-a-second-chance is also, despite my above comments, League of Legends.

At first, a friend of mine recommended it to me, I tried it and had no idea why this game played a bit like Warcraft III but wasn't Warcraft III at all. And what were these minion things and why were they so suicidal? What was the point of leveling up, anyway? And this item shop is so confusing! And what are these tower/statue things? Let me just walk up to one and see!

Yeah. I wasn't impressed. I kept trying but between the community (how DARE someone be new at something! Let's proceed not to tell him what he's doing wrong and instead yell at him for doing it until he learns his lesson) and... well, actually no. It was just the community.

Luckily, I later found a group of IRL friends to play it with and they taught me how to not suck so much at League. I've set it down every now and again, but I always seem to come back to it.

Funny you should bring this up, I'm actually in the middle of giving a game a second try right now.

The game is Final Fantasy VII. I've tried playing it before, but I could never really get into it. I just recently downloaded it onto my PSP, to give it one final try to get through it. I'm... actually enjoying it quite a bit more this time.

Making it portable has actually helped tremendously. Since I can turn the system off whenever I choose, I'm no longer slave to the game's save system. The graphics also don't bother me NEARLY as much on a tiny PSP screen as they did on my big hi-def TV. And the lack of voice acting is easier to forgive on a handheld.

I just reached the point where I can train my first chocobo, and I'm starting to see why this game is so beloved... even if it hasn't aged quite as well as might think.

Just curious, when's the best time to take out a life insurance policy on Aerith?
I haven't played VII in a dog's age, but I would say that if the plot is steering you towards the ice continent up north, it's worry time.

On topic: The original Grandia.

I bought it on a whim because it looked decent and cost the exact same amount as I had in my pocket at the time. I did find it enjoyable at first, but I was uncomfortable with the very unusual combat system, so I avoided any fights I could. This would soon enough come back to bite me, as I encountered a boss that I just couldn't beat. Cue ragequit and three months of replaying Crash 3 and the Spyro trilogy.

Then one day I decided to get a PS2. I saved up the money, finished off all the PS1 games I was playing, went to my favorite game store and asked for a PS2. And they were sold out.

So I was stuck rummaging through my stash of PS1 games for something to kill the time until PS2s were back in stock, and there was Grandia again. I had actually forgotten that I owned it at that point, and as the memories were coming back, I recalled far more fun than frustration.

I gave Grandia another whack and, being more accustomed to the combat system, I accumulated far more EXP than I had last time. I actually beat that once-invincible boss so easily I didn't even notice! I just suddenly realized that I was past it, and had no idea how it had happened.

I ended up playing nothing but Grandia for two months after I got my PS2. It remains my all-time favorite game to this day.

Final Fantasy XII. I agree with many in that FFX is where Final Fantasy jumped the shark, but after coming back to XII after initially abandoning it for being so "different", I found I liked the open-ended direction it took. The story leaves more to be desired, but I found the gameplay to be a blast once I figured out the gambit mechanics.

I have a few that i put down just because i had a crappy machine and couldn't run them

Number one with a bullet would have to be League of Legends. My buddy had me install it, made me run the tutorial and then threw me into PvP with him. I had no idea how the shop worked, how the champs worked, or what the hell inhibitors were. So after 20 frustrating games, i quit. Deleted it off my machine, and forgot about it. Til about 6 months ago. Then suddenly i started playing bot matches and reading specs and figuring out champs. Now i don't mind it at all. When i'm not grinding on D3 or playing Global Agenda or The Witcher 2, i play LoL a ton

Second would be Jedi Academy. I found the beginning snooze worthy. Then after a year or so, my buddy brought his laptop over and told me to give it another shot, and we spent the majority of that day hosting Free For All matches with Guns and Force powers disabled. Playing with a Saber staff and darth mauling it up was hilarious fun. Its even better with custom skins. Nothing like playing as the greatest ninja of the Lin Kuei clan and just steamrolling people as a stick figure.

The worst game i gave a second chance was Fallout 3. It bored me to tears. I read about the back story and played 1 and 2 and the ps2 game (Brotherhood of Steel i think) and 3 was the weakest of them i felt. Just personal opinion.

The first one that comes to mind is Under a Killing Moon. Technically, I loved the hell out of it the first time I played, but it was a long time before I actually did that, because I had been put off by the interface in Overseer, which was basically the same. It was just a matter of getting used to it, and I came to realize it's actually a damn good interface, I was just approaching it at the wrong angle (I was basically expecting an FPS interface, TBH).

Of course, the game itself is brilliant. I'm currently at the start of The Pandora Directive, and Overseer will be next. Thank the Goddess for GOG!

Skyrim is also a kind of example of this, because I started playing it only so I could say I hated it as much as I had hated Oblivion. I'm still swallowing my words to this day, and having a blast while doing it.

A little old, old game called Kagero: Deception 2 for PS1
When I first played this game...I had no idea what I was doing. I saw a bad guy and wanted to run up to him and button mash him into oblivion; but what was this nothing was happening?
Then I realised that ooooooh you have to set traps to kill these guys....well that's boring forget this game.
Then when I was about...10 I gave it another shot and I actually wound up really REALLY liking the game. It was fun having to be resourceful with your traps and figure out a way to exploit your enemy.

Tomb Raider 3. I got it when I was, like... ten. I couldn't even BEGIN to make any progress, and I got frustrated quickly.

Of course, when I played it at 16, I realized it's the best Tomb Raider to date.

Mass Effect.
A few months before I purchased the second game, beat it about 4 times, and loved it.
Then, I went to buy the first game.
All across the board I thought it was okay, but pretty tough, playing as a soldier. Eventually it got so difficult I gave up completely.
After Mass Effect 3, I went back to the first game, and started playing as an infiltrator, and absolutely loved it, I also think playing through half the game as a soldier gave me the ability to train assault rifles, becuase it always gave me the option, and I tended to take it.

Now, it is one of my favorite games.

Oblivion. It was the first TES game I'd played and I returned it shortly after going through the first Oblivion gate. Ended up buying it again a month or so later and loved it enough to go and buy Morrowind.

For the life of me I can't think of anything I've hated and tried again. Though I do have 9001 games I still need to finish. I guess that could count. In that case, Dues Ex: HR would be one of the better games that I've come back to.

World of Warcraft

I got it for christmas in '04, rolled a Druid and only got up to level 9 or 10 before getting kinda bored. I came back several weeks later when I had nothing better to do, and rolled a Warrior on another realm. Well, 8 years and 600 days played later... I'm still playing pretty regularly. It's one of the best games I've ever played.

Mass Effect. I really didn't engage with it at all first time round but, with a second playthrough, I was in love.
Also, Portal. I just didn't get it at first, somehow. Now I love it as much as everyone else on Earth does.

I've actually given Half-Life 2 about three chances and it has never impressed me. I do not get the hype. The characters and settings are good, not great. The storytelling is brilliant and I like the story but the gameplay and pacing just force out a giant 'uuuuuurrrgh!'.
All of this. I tried portal, but got stuck on an early puzzle for some reason and gave up. Figured out the solution later and loved the rest of the game.

Oh god, Half Life. I'm informed that I must be fundamentally flawed as both a person and a gamer since I didn't like it, but... I just can't. I've tried, I've even beaten it twice, once on Xbox, once on PC, but I just don't get it. Maybe it's because I don't seem to like dicking around as much as some, or maybe it's because the piecemeal scenery made the whole world feel like it was made out of cardboard, or that the puzzles were almost all: put heavy thing, or collection of slightly heavy things in one place. Or that I got lost in the levels far too often, I just don't know :( The kicker though was that I just couldn't get invested in the story or characters. If I like the story or characters, I can accept a lot of gameplay flaws, and games with great gameplay and S&C are my absolute favorites, but the only character I liked in Half Life was Alyx, and I found the story just a little bit silly. That being said, I love and respect Valve a lot, and I think they've got a workplace model that's the best in the industry, for the employees at least, but... sorry I just can't get into Half Life.

Probably gonna get some flak for this one... but Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. When I first played it I was emotionally wounded by how much of a betrayal it was to the franchise, but a few weeks later I was bored and put it in again and found it to be an extremely fun lego vehicle builder type game thingy, whatever you would call it. Once I got past how it wasn't a Banjo game I had tons of fun building all sorts of crazy contraptions... fuck that space world though
