Funny you should bring this up, I'm actually in the middle of giving a game a second try right now.
The game is Final Fantasy VII. I've tried playing it before, but I could never really get into it. I just recently downloaded it onto my PSP, to give it one final try to get through it. I'm... actually enjoying it quite a bit more this time.
Making it portable has actually helped tremendously. Since I can turn the system off whenever I choose, I'm no longer slave to the game's save system. The graphics also don't bother me NEARLY as much on a tiny PSP screen as they did on my big hi-def TV. And the lack of voice acting is easier to forgive on a handheld.
I just reached the point where I can train my first chocobo, and I'm starting to see why this game is so beloved... even if it hasn't aged quite as well as might think.
Just curious, when's the best time to take out a life insurance policy on Aerith?
I haven't played VII in a dog's age, but I would say that if the plot is steering you towards the ice continent up north, it's worry time.
On topic: The original Grandia.
I bought it on a whim because it looked decent and cost the exact same amount as I had in my pocket at the time. I did find it enjoyable at first, but I was uncomfortable with the very unusual combat system, so I avoided any fights I could. This would soon enough come back to bite me, as I encountered a boss that I just couldn't beat. Cue ragequit and three months of replaying Crash 3 and the Spyro trilogy.
Then one day I decided to get a PS2. I saved up the money, finished off all the PS1 games I was playing, went to my favorite game store and asked for a PS2. And they were sold out.
So I was stuck rummaging through my stash of PS1 games for something to kill the time until PS2s were back in stock, and there was Grandia again. I had actually forgotten that I owned it at that point, and as the memories were coming back, I recalled far more fun than frustration.
I gave Grandia another whack and, being more accustomed to the combat system, I accumulated far more EXP than I had last time. I actually beat that once-invincible boss so easily I didn't even notice! I just suddenly realized that I was past it, and had no idea how it had happened.
I ended up playing nothing but Grandia for two months after I got my PS2. It remains my all-time favorite game to this day.
