I did a relaxing search through the forums and couldn't find a flat out "best gameplay mechanics" thread, figured I'd start one...if it pisses anyone off then sure get rid of it, but I'd like to see opinions on this.

My favorite is Bayonetta, the story is lame, characters are ridiculous, cut scenes are "meh" but I have played that game to death because of how much I love the mechanics and style.

the Force Unleashed is up there too

I'd make a poll out of this but there's too many game styles to choose from

I win!

Edit: As for new games: Super Meat Boy.
The platforming is so damn good, it's even better than what the 16bit era produced.

Oblivion's stealth mechanic always intrigued and entertained me.
As in, light level, boot weight, movement speed etc. I hope they build on it for Skyrim.

I want wall hugging. :>

I did love the "LB-up, LT-down" mechanic of Mirror's edge. It was very intuitive.

I like the Bioshock-esque idea of 'magic'[footnote]You can disguise it as genetic splicing and bioengineering all you want, 2K, but I see a lightning bolt and I call it a lightning bolt[/footnote] on one hand and weapon on the other. In that game in particular it worked really well.

So is this the game with the best mechanics, or the best mechanics in general?

At any rate, I'm throwing in the Disgaea series. Item Worlds, Team Attacks, Team Specials, Tower attacks, complex arrangement systems; it all contributes to a surprisingly deep yet lighthearted game series.

I could go all day on this. For one though, I say I like the item button assignment of the zelda games. Judging by Skyward Sword's demo, hotkey assignment is done even quicker by holding a button and pointing at the desired item similar to Ratchet and Clank but with a larger selection and the ease of a mouse.

Super Mario. I remember grabbing the controller and ever tying fit instantly. With modern games requiring more complex mechanics, I'd go for Portal. Very marioesque in it's simplicity of controls.

The Magic in Magicka was excellent. I would gladly see a full-lenght and serious RPG with this sort of mechanics.
Definitely this.

I would KILL for something like that.

Threads of Fate combat mechanic. Between the hordes of turn based RPG's and real-time RPG's, Threads of Fate stands out because of it's original and awesome gameplay mechanic. Actually, most of the game was quite original.

I've always felt that controls in Zelda always clicked. It was always intuitive, even though you could only assign so many items at once. Twilight Princess was a mixed back. On one hand, the wheel was faster than the menu. On the other hand, any motion control dependant on the gyroscope in the nunchuck was all sorts of bad. I really didn't mind waggling the Wiimote that much. Considering how many counter-attacks the game gives you based on button input, the waggle lag was never an impediment.

In terms of shooters, I find Metroid Prime 3's execution of pointer-based aiming one of my favourite FPS control schemes. I have troubles with controller-based dual analog and although MP3 will never technically be as fast, I just find MP3 comfortable to play.

In terms of actual game mechanics beyond controls, I have to agree that Magicka's magic system is just done so well when you factor in friends and the multiplayer is by far the most fun I've had playing any games in a long time. The sheer chaos of playing with your friends turns what would have been a shallow Diablo clone (in terms of gameplay at least) into one of the best games of the year.

Totally agree.

Fable was the first game I played that featured having a second set of spell buttons when you hold down the trigger button...loved that, hated how they did it in the 2nd game

I"m a big fan of non-stop playing so I really dislike the way Dragon Age and games that make you pause constantly in order get spells or potions or maneuvers ready...I've never played a better way of using magic than in Magicka, they better make a full blown epic out of it, it'd be worth it

Just wondering what people's favorite games are based on the gameplay...like I really enjoy Dragon Age but I get bored as hell with actually playing (fighting, running, assigning spells) those kind of things separate games.

I play RPGs like DA because I like the story, plot lines, characters, scenes, areas but they have no replay value cause they're boring to physically play

I play fighting games, side scrollers, FPS, and 3rd person fighting games cause I like mashing buttons and running around but most of the time everything else is secondary

That's why Mario rocks, nobody cares what's actually going on in the world of Mario just that it's seriously fun to get through levels

Golden suns Djinni system. Changing the characters strengths and giving them new spells dependent on the djinni makeup was nice.

Does anyone remember Kung Fu Chaos? I had so much fun with that game, when I was younger. Almost everything about it was mediocre, except for the gameplay, which was fucking awesome.
