Ok there are many threads on the coolest major villain but I was thinking what is the best enemy (boss, grunt whatever) from a gameplay point of view. I was thinking perhaps Crimson Heads from The Umbrella Chronicles or The Alien Battleship from Crysis. Discuss.

(I would add a poll but there are far to many candidates)

umm... Golbez gets my vote, and bahamut, and leviathan. All from ff4, simply coz of their backstory and the rewards for beating them.

Master Chief.

I play the game where I imagine him to be the villain, a lot more fun that way.

The final boss in Mother 3. It's unusual because
It's essentially one long interactive cutscene. You can't attack, while he can, so all you can do is keep healing and defending until he comes to his senses. It's one of those "I know you're in there somewhere" fights, but it's actually done well for once!

Giygas in EarthBound ain't no pushover himself, you fight him by
Praying. Seriously. It's this ability Paula has that has minor effects that range from slight healing to random status ailments. It's functionally useless except really early on and during this fight, where it does damage to Giygas and is, in fact, the only way to beat him

I liked Draygon and Ridley in Super Metroid and Barinade in Ocarina of Time. I find them very difficult and still fun to come back to. But my favourite is the blob boss in South Park 64, scared the shit out of me! I say it is the most intimidating boss I have ever faced, but I have beaten it only once and I am happy with that.

I like Ridley in any Metroid, his always such a hard fight and I always just scrape past him. And in metroid fusion he gives you screw attack which is awsome.

The evil commando invading innocent Covenant space? I like it.

From a gameplay point of view I'd probably say Dante (as an enemy) in DMC4 or Vergil in DMC3. Both were on the "same terms" as you and they weren't big monsters or anything, but they had a bunch of skills and used most of them like a human would. Especially on harder difficulties it did feel like you were playing against another person who was just as smart and sometimes faster on the controller than you are.
