For best RPG ever and my favorite game ever there's Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (3 was close but I gotta go with 4). Each character is extremely well developed (even side characters). There are dungeons that are tailored to each character and reflect their inner personality and thoughts. The story takes several well written twists and leads to an ending that no one will expect.

Gameplay is where it really shines. The battle system requires a healthy degree of strategy and challenge. Even on normal difficulty one wrong move can get you killed in a matter of seconds. You need to develop a battle plan quickly or risk being destroyed in an instant.

In regards again to character plots the fact that hearing a character's story is not only interesting but actually makes you more powerful in battle is revolutionary. While you may begin a character's story with only the thought of getting stronger you'll find a well written and engaging tale that will keep you wondering until the end. When this is the case for all the side stories in a game in addition to the main one you know the writers weren't slacking.

Finally, there's the entire Persona fusion system. Each entity you can summon has an interesting design. They can even be combined to make stronger Personas. It's always rewarding to create a Persona with all the necessary skills to crush your enemies.

So in conclusion and in my opinion Persona 4 is the best game of the series and the best game ever made.

For me, Bubble Bobble - perhaps because, well, actually I don't actually know why I'm so taken with it. I played it in the arcades when it came out, played it on my Master System, Gamegear, then Amiga and basically on every system I've had since.. Not 20 minutes ago I had a wee game using MAME on linux. These days I play it with my 4 year old son (with my X-arcade dual tankstick) and we both love it to bits. He'd probably be able to tell you why it's such a good game better than I can.

In second place would be Pinball Illusions or Fantasies on the Amiga (now DosBox). The horror style tables on both game were just awesome.

After that I'd have to say Half-life 2, then Far Cry, Painkiller and Dawn of War. I do have a special place in my heart for the old Half-life mod, Action Half-life - but that's mainly because I was a member of the worst hl clan in the history of the game (and we frequently got to play the big boys precisely because we sucked so bad and had such a laugh :)

[edit - one day I'm going to get a system that can play the newer PC games. Apparently some of them are pretty good. My creaky old laptop just cannae take em cap'n]

FPS - Halo 3; I've played this game for nearly 2 years and I'm still not bored of it.

RTS - Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings/The Conquerors; best RTS map-maker ever, I'd still be playing custom games if MSN hadn't shut down their CD game servers (anyone know any good Age2 servers?)

Puzzle - Portal; I think you all know why

TBS - Galactic Civilizations II; Shame it's not more popular, this is truly the pinnacle of 4x strategy

RPG - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords; never finished the first (probably would if I ever bought it) but I believe I've played this one 7 or 8 times

TPS - Gears of War 2; Admittedly it doesn't have much competition but this game is great for local multiplayer, connect a few boxes and fill up the roster with bots and you're ready for some extreme carnage.

Adventure - Metroid Prime/The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask; Too hard to choose so both, these are two of Nintendo's greatest masterpieces (and that's saying a lot).

Platformer - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island; yet another shining example of Nintendo's best work, and one of the most inventive sequels ever made (BRIEF ASIDE: Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is a close second in this category)

Fighter Sim: Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader; alright, so it stretches the definition of "sim" a little but this game is still by far the most fun I've had inside a virtual cockpit

Fighting: Soul Calibur II; I'm not a huge fan of fighting games mostly because they're all hand-to-hand, not so here

FPS: Its a tie between Unreal Tournament 2004 and Project Snowblind. UT04 had that twitch gaming that made you want to get better. And it had a huge multiplayer that still has a great community. Project Snowblind was just that one FPS that kinda did everything right. You had good weapons, some bio-electrical add ons (I forget what they're called). It even had a story and driving section that didnt suck.

+ Metroid Prime Hunters. Never have I had so much fun playing a FPS on a handheld device.

RTS: Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends. Nothing beats 3 great classes and a overall wonderful steampunk and fantasy design.

Turn Based Strat: I think the Final Fantasy Tactics games owns this area for me. Just the amount of time it takes to do everything and the countless battles you can go through. The amount of weapons and the amount of classes you can tweak your character to use is just perfect.

Music: Audio surf. It's kinda like weird at first. But once you get the hang of it You'll end up spending a a couple minutes each day trying to nail a song.

Casual: Peggle. It's basicly digital crack. Nuff said.

All-Time/RTS = Starcraft. Childhood classic. My first real "hardcore," or whatever term you use, video game. Stays good even after ten years, and the community made maps and gametypes make it feel like more then just one game.

TBS = Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones. Can't pinpoint why I prefer it over the other games or Advanced Wars. I just prefer it.

WRPG = World of Warcraft. Well since I played it for about two years, I guess it has to be my favorite. Played it far more the other RPGs. The first time climb to level 60 was a real adventure, and the raids were amazing group experiences. TBC was good, but the raid content was changed too much and killed the game for me. Forced raids though 10-man Karazhan, and reducing the cap to 25, ruined raids, and the game overall.

JRPG = Tales of Vesperia. Fast-paced and rewarding combat system with great characters, story, and enviornments. Tales of Symphonia had a better overal story, but Vesperia surpasses everything else, including characters.

Puzzle = Portal. You know the drill.

Shooter = Call of Duty 4. The online play is the most addictive I have played.

Action Adventure = Metroid Prime. A great gameplay world. A fluent mix of shooter, puzzles, and adventure elements. Plus a fun arsenal with a large variety of enemies. What is not too like?

Adventure = Neverhood. Another childhood favorite. Fun puzzles with a funny tone too it. I need to find another copy.

Platformer = Sly Cooper: ATTR. Thief and stealth gameplay without any of the boring stuff, plus a stylish cartoon feel, and the coolest racoon ever.

Music = Rock Band 2. OK, so it is really just a $60 track pack for Rock Band with no real upgrades, but importing the Rock Band songs give it the best music game soundtrack, and that is excluding DLC.

Misc. = Trauma Center: Under the Knife. I wish it had more operations based around real health problems rather then a fictional virus, but it was original, fully maximized the DS, addictive, and felt rewarding, even if the patients were fake.

RPG: World of Warcraft - This game has stolen away more months of my life than I care to mention. (at last check I believe I was over 350 days played). It has all the depth and rewards to keep you coming back time and time again.

FPS: (TIE) Halo 2/CoD4 - Both games have revolutionized multiplayer as we know it. Halo 2 brought Xbox Live to the masses, while CoD4 perfected the class system and has among the best balance of any FPS to date.

Fighter: Marvel vs Capcom 2 - Holy jesus was this game fun. Nothing was better than pulling off some ridiculous 150 hit combo or chaining into 2-3 assists in a row for an easy kill. Something has to be said also about a game with 50-something characters, and each one had a team they worked in. That's just incredible.

RTS: Warcraft III - I prefer the Warcraft playstyle much more than the Starcraft playstyle. Heroes brought a whole new dynamic to RTS games. There are limitless possibilites for custom games and maps with Blizzard's insane map editor. There's a thousand different ways to play and each has it's own following. I'm a HUGE fan of Line Tower Wars and Hero Line War.

Platform: Super Mario 64 - The best game on the N64 is also the best platformer to this day. This game was just flat out amazing for it's time, and still holds up today.

RPG - Planescape: Torment. Easily the best-written and most thought provoking game ever made, actually comparable to a (great) book in it's content. Completing this game changed my life.
