I also played SMT: Strange Jouney recently which i really liked, although i was quite surprised how long it took me, over 100h i recall. It combines several features of previous smt games.
Chrono Trigger probably, but i only played the SNES version.
Hrm what else, ah Final Fantasy Tactics A2. Well the Story was bananas, but the gameplay itself flowed quite well.
I could also recommend the Castlevania DS games, not so much rpg but, 2d platformer with rpg elements, nonetheless good games.
I've always been partial to the handheld ports of the Dragon Quest games. Dragon Quest I was the first RPG I ever beat, and Dragon Quest III was almost the first one I beat without a guide. Unfortunately the save battery died when I got to the final dungeon, which seems to be a pattern with me and RPGs. I know the first time I fired up Dragon Quest IV for the DS and heard the fully orchestrated main theme, I almost teared up. I need to finish that one of these days, but for whatever reason I just can't bring myself to play console RPGs anymore. Seem't like I've grown out of them, or at least my tastes have moved away from them.
Oh, if anyone's interested in a handheld WRPG, Mazes of Fate is a great little Eye of the Beholder clone for the Gameboy Advance. Well, it's sort of a clone. The dungeon crawling portions are an almost perfect continuation of the gameplay style of the old PC Beholder trilogy; the overworld portions are more like a traditional console RPG, complete with a topdown view.
