I want to make the most of owning Half Life 2 by downloading a mod or two. But there's just so many of them that i don't know where to start!

I want to get Dear Esther but i think i'll wait until after the hd update cos it looks excellent.
And i have downloaded and completed Portal Preludes which i thought was pretty awesome (script could've been done a tad better though).

So for those of you who have played a good few HL2 mods; feel free to recommend some!

EDIT: Anyone played Korsakovia?

[HEADING=1]GARRY'S MOD[/HEADING]

It'll cost $10, if I remember correctly, but it is sooo worth it.

But, if free is more your thing, Get A Life [http://www.getalife-mod.com/] is pretty good.

Try Outpost 16

It's short but the main focus was on level design and it is epic.

Minerva. http://www.hylobatidae.org/minerva/

So good that Valve brought the guy in to finish up Episode 2.

The one I am working on, DOOM: Source. I love publicity threads...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRyrTR8KUVw Old footage is OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD. It actually plays like DOOM now.

Dear esther takes around half an hour to complete, but is well worth it.
So yes, Minerva Metastatis is wonderful, and garrys mod is a blast if you like half life 2, sandbox and lego (who doesn't)

That times a million. I think I have clocked more Gmod hours then any game ever.

Naturally I'll side with Garry's Mod but that has now evolved to a fully fledged retail game on Steam as it's grown so much. Which is fully deserved because it's a phenominal use of the engine, just look at the 'Fretta' gamemodes on the website to see what people are still innovating with it today.

The best currently FREE HL2 mod (not complete enough to warrant priced release yet) has GOT to be multiplayer survival epic Zombie Panic:Source. A combination of gripping terror and hilarious online antics have led to me spending hours upon hours of time playing this mod.

Agreed, and I may very well have to try out this mod now.

Dystopia [http://www.dystopia-game.com], Cyberpunk, team-based multiplayer shooter. One of the more well-crafted multiplayer mods out there, also has a global league for competitive play (if you're into that sort of thing).
