The title says it all, I'm having a few friends over for a couple of hours and I want to know the best LOCAL multiplayer game on the PS3 that can support at least three people.

Little Big Planet's a great one; Most fighting games like Street Fighter, Blazblue, etc have local multiplayer, two players only though, Borderlands has local splitscreen co-op but I'm not sure if you can have 4 players or if it restricts you to two locally. That's about all I can think of but LBP alone is hours of fun with friends.
You can get some good fun out of playing splitscreen with a friend on Borderlands. It's only 2 player but just a suggestion. If you want 4 player locally, than Little Big Planet is good too.
I had great fun (the most so far) with Rag Doll Kung Fu. 4 player supported, good old sitting next to each other fun. You can DL it on PSN, definetely try the 'capture the fish' mode, it's much better than the main fighting. It gets incredibly competetive and you get skilled as hell.
If you want some more arcade type games then try Scott Pilgrim or Castle Crashers. Both PSN and up to 4 players. Both side-scrolling beat 'em ups.

Little Big Planet hands down. Really, LBP with some friends has got to be one of the most fun times I've ever had.
The Resistance games have good split-screen co-op and competitive multiplayer, and you can play both split-screen and online with Resistance 2.
Warhawk is 4 player split screen online, theres nothing better than coordinating a 4 man operation to steal the other teams flag and bringing it home. (You will also need to put some epic music on your ps3 to listen to while carrying out said operation).
Also motorstorm pacific rift is fun with 4 players.
