As afforementioned, Halo is pretty good Local, but there is one game that comes to mind...
Phantom Crash, it's old and pretty underground but it's so original and fun that it's worth getting, problem is that it freezes on the 360, so best get an original Xbox.

I would have to say one of the greatest lan games for the cube would have to be Super Smash Brothers Melee (did i spell that right?). I just had a great time with that game with a lot of my friends. The new one is fun, but having to use the wii mote and the numchucks ruined it for me.
Actually you don't have to use the stupid wiimote, just plug a couple gamecube controls in and you play it just like Melee (Apart from the new characters, stages etc, and the slight change in physics)

All of you should be ashamed for not mentioning Clonk, probably the most versatile local multiplayer game ever perceived on any game system.

I gotta agree, TS2 was great, but now it's obsoleat. I tried to pick it up again but I just can't keep at it due to the horrid AI, bad physics, old graphics, and lack of ragdolls. Me likey rag dolls!!

But I digress.

HAZE is a good game to play with a friend. Army of 2 is great, but only on the PS3 for local play. Another reason XBox is messin up.
WarHawk is ok, but I find it annoying to play splitscreen.

007:nightfire, turn on some bots and you have a winner.
The best thing about nightfire is when you turn the weapons selection onto random, just because its sometimes so wierd (funny bugs on certain guns start happening, and you sometimes get turrets with guns on that clearly weren't mean't to be kept in the game.

Can't beat Smash Brros, Wario Ware and Mario Kart in one fun booze-filled evening.
Also Halo 3 i think pretty much perfects local multiplayer, particularly with link-up, as long as you eliminate screen looking bastards.
That's simple: get eight or sixteen players (four to a tv), play team games (ctf, slayer, etc), make sure the four (eight) people on a team use the same tv(s), and place the tvs back to back. That way you have eight (sixteen) people in one room playing in the same game, but without the possibility of someone screen watching.

For the PC it's GTA2 all the way! Wasted a lot of time on a LAN with this beauty. It's also free (as in play and no pay) today.

On the console it's all about Pro Evo Soccer and Guitar Hero for me today, which are very much "you like it or you don't".

Red Star is pretty cool indeed, Docterpus, and so unforgiving difficult. Getting you're ass handed to you while playing co-op is easier to digest than in singleplayer.
