Best Man Speech

My good friend is getting married and he has asked me to be his best man. With that comes the best man's speech. I have never been been a best man before so I have no idea what to say. What sort of things does one customarily talk about? How long should it be? I know it will be a personal thing, so I am just asking for a general idea.

Also, they had a pretty rocky relationship to begin with so I would like to avoid bringing that up if possible. Thanks in advance.

You should keep it short and sweet. Talk about some of his good qualities, how good they are together or something, just keep it positive.

Teasingly mention that the brides been around the block with all his mates. Or make a joke about the hooker he slept with once on holiday.

I was my friends best man at his wedding and everyone was surprised I didnt do anything inappropriate for the toast

It's supposed to be stuff in the lines off "In the early days of our friendship, I had never dreamed that <insert guy's name here> would ever settle down and marry such a beautiful woman. Or perhaps it was more in the lines of not believing there was such a beautiful woman that would settle down and marry him."

Then talk about how you think they fit together, how you're proud of them, and then finish with a toast.

You know all those "clever" jokes people are going to say you should tell? Don't. Just don't. It's, for all intents and purposes, the two worst kinds of crowds you can have at once; People you've always known and strangers who you will probably have to meet again in the future. Think about what your next 10 years (or more) will be like if you are "The one who was the best man and thought he was SO funny"... 3 mins and I would seriously advise anything risque unless you have Charm to pull it off.
