I know, tough call, right?

I'm not sure if this one counts since it's animated, but I personally think Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva wins. It stayed true to the characters, had an interesting story and still managed to keep the gameplay aspects in the film itself.

If I had to pick a live action one though...I'd say the only one I don't really mind watching is the original Mortal Kombat.

What about you all?

Doom, which while changing a few Things stayed as close to the Source as it possibly can and as such is one of the better Adaptions. The same goes for Silent Hill, which while changing quite a few Details and Plots of the Original Games, is at its core as close as it gets, and to be entirely honest, both Movies could be far worse than what they are.

Still, most Adaptions i dread, mainly because either something is changed too much from the Original Source, or they are entirely not working as a Big Screen Adaption in the first place. Some Games just dont lend themselves to being made into a Movie.

I thought Silent Hill was fairly decent, all things considered. They stuck with the evil cult business which I felt was lame, but the series has been sticking with that.
I am also a big fan of the original Street Fighter movie, it is awesome in its terribleness.

kinda hard to define "best"

does best mean the movie you enjoyed the most? or the one that stayed closest to the source (video game)?

personally my favorite is prince of persia, i loved it, even with the changes to the plot.

doom wasn't horrible, i mean wasn't much story there in the first place right?

also resident evil movies are a fun popcorn flick to watch, same for mortal kombat.

Prince of Persia is the best, I think.

It boosted the action to movie standards while keeping the formula of the first game.

I just hope the Uncharted movie doesn't flop or I will be extremely dissapointed.

In terms of success? Resident Evil series has had the most commercial success since there are 4 now 5 in the series.

In terms of closely based to its source and following, I'd say Tomb Raider was pretty damn close to its source material.

Personally I enjoyed Prince of Persia as a great movie based on the game even with the changes.

I thought Doom had the greatest tribute moment, with the 1st person shooting segment in the ending of the movie, as part of it. So that got +20. Plot wise it kept close to the truth by having no plot.

Super Mario Brothers was a groin punch. As a child I enjoyed it because I was stupid, older I got the more terrified by it I was. An english Mario and a latin Luigi, that whole other world plot.

Silent Hill kept the spirit of the series, I enjoyed that. Though I would have liked to have seen more radio and wandering in the darkness rather than the shock tactics with the creatures.

the silent hill movie had nothing to do with the games. I had fun with it, but as a silent hill piece it is a complete failure. The only relation to the games is a few token set-pieces like random pyramid head and the school. that said, it had skin-ripping and barbwire rape. and hilariously bad child acting.

I didn't see Doom, but what I've been told is that it ALSO has nothing to do with the games, except for a couple monster names slapped onto mooks.

I can't think of a single vidjagame movie that was actually GOOD (feel free to point some out, escapists, if you know any), so i'm gonna go with Mortal Kombat, because it could have been REALLY good, if the casting were a little better. The fights are cool, alot of the effects still look good (not great, but good), and the plot is basically in line with the game. Besides, Kano. Just Kano.

Mmm, that's good Australian

Unfortunately, if you're asking about movies that are actually based on a video game, I don't think any even exist. Movies like Prince of Persia, Resident Evil, Silent Hill... none of them are actually real adaptations of the stories told in the games.

Assuming we mean based on video game franchises and actually taking place within the universe and chronology established in the game, I agree with Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva. The really, really close runner-up is Advent Children, but Eternal Diva was just so perfect, it was exactly what I would expect a Professor Layton film to look like, feel like, and be about.

Though if we're talking about the medium of film and not just movies (thus counting television shows), Clannad (the anime, not the awful excuse for a film) would win easily. Steins;Gate would be a very close second, followed by Kanon in third place. All incredible, all based on video games.

Oh, though Wakfu deserves mention as well. Kind of sad that America hasn't made a good game-to-film adaptation yet, but France makes a children's show based on a Square Enix MMO and creates a fantastic cartoon with animation that you will never believe is actually Flash.

I have a pretty simple answer (in comparison to some others) but I might as well throw my two cents into the ring.

I've always seen Mortal Kombat as the best video game movie simply because it was a great big heap of mindless, silly fun. I think it's impossible for me to even think about it without smiling.

Wikipedia list of films based on video games [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_based_on_video_games].

is probably top of the list for me.

Halo: Legends wasn't technically a film but rather a collection of short films (similar to the Animatrix), but I thought it was pretty damn enjoyable to see what animation companies would choose to do with the license.

This is important to bring up. For some, it's just a matter of 'was this a good film?', while for others, it's 'was this a good film both in and of itself but also with respect to its original source material?'

Personally, I enjoyed Silent Hill when I watched it, but I didn't think it was a good Silent Hill film. To contrast that, I thought Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva was both a good film and a pretty good Professor Layton story too.

Clannad [...] Kanon
I'll be honest, while I loved Clannad as a show, I couldn't stand Kanon. None of it made any god-damned sense to me. I think Air was even worse. I dunno, maybe I should have another look at them.

Kanon made no sense? I certainly understand Air making no sense, because it really didn't. One the main guy turned into a crow for no reason, I got completely lost. It was still enjoyable, but having watched both Clannad and Kanon before it, it left barely any impression on my past the awesome OP song.

Kanon wasn't as good as Clannad, but it made enough sense and was still rather emotional. Just not as much as Clannad; Clannad just breaks you completely.

I do recommend checking out Steins;Gate. It's about time travel, and it's freaking fantastic.

EDIT: Oh, and on the topic of the Silent Hill film, I thought the first half was absolutely perfect; brought the cinematic and visual style of the series to film as well as I could have hoped. Then it went into Silent Hill having a history, abandoned the "reflection of the protagonist's psychology" element that made the games so great, and pulled that freakin' stupid ending that just ret-conned the entire struggle for no understandable reason.

The first Mortal Kombat movie, that was awesome, plus it had a bad ass theme song.
