I found Flatout 2 to be perfect for a LAN. It runs on low/mid-end boxes and destruction derby is simple fun.

With the console open, type sv_lan 1 to force the game into LAN mode. Then type ?sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0?, to overrule the lobby. Now type net_start to get the server ready.
The last step is to select a map; just type map (remember spacing after map), and a list of the different maps will pop up (you can select them with the mouse, or scroll through all of the with the arrow keys). The ones with vs in between is supposedly versus maps (haven?t checked). Select a map and press enter and your server is up!
then "openserverbrowser" for joiners
also... CSS? hldm? no valve game i've ever played needed more than one copy. thats why they make good lan gameslinchowlewy said:a note with L4D you need a copy for everyone. that applies to all of valves games if you want to lan.

playing ANY of the BF's against swarms of bots is heaps of fun.
what else.. *thinks*
starcraft I guess has its moments; especially some of the custom maps. You can also go warcraft 3 if your computers can run it.
What else have I tried and liked *ponders* Act of War is alright.. I think that's it for now, if I think of anymore I'll add them.
