Tamriel Rebuilt for Morrowind is insane. Like huge landmass with massive cities and writing arguably better than vanilla insane. Too bad they never finished it...

That and Europa Barbarorum and Rome Total Realism 7. Once again, better than vanilla. Creative Assembly should track down all the people who made those mods and put then on the Rome 2: Total War team.

The Eagle and The Radiant Cross for the original Mount and Blade. It was like playing M&B a few centuries later: same map, new factions, slightly changed old factions, firearms. It was awesome. Still looking for something similar for Warband.
Also DotA.

Xcomutil for X-Com, ooh yeah, start up the wayback machine. Originaly it stopped the game from defaulting the difficulty to Beginner, but so much more functionality has been added to it since then.

I'm very into the modding community, so I could name far too many to fit into one post. Instead I'll just go with the most flashy and visually impressive one; Mechwarrior: Living Legends

This is a mod. I have to keep reminding myself of that every time I play, it's a mod. Not even a finished mod, but one still in beta to boot. I've played games sold at full retail price that neither played or looked nearly as good!

Hell, I don't know how they did it, but in the latest release version they even got the commentator from Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries to record for them on the arena maps. It's bloody brilliant!

Project Reality mod of Battlefield 2. It's the ultimate realistic military combat simulator, and it's made in a way that's actually pretty fun to play, if you can handle a non-competitive, slow-paced experience, other players, and the steep difficulty curve.

Insurgency, which completely changes the Source Engine to something that doesn't even remotely feel the same. However, the community is a group of absolute dickhats.

Underhell, which is a great combination of action and horror, and is long despite only the Prologue being released.

There's a version of that mod for Warband, though I haven't tried it so I don't know how much might or might not have changed. I remember playing it for the original M&B as well and although the guns were extremely imbalanced in places it was a lot of fun.

One mod with guns in it I *have* tried for Waband is 1755 Old Frontier, which is set in colonial North America and is actually really well done. Rough in places, and some things such as the packs of roving wildlife don't quite work that well nor is it particularly well balanced. But still damned fun!

I looked up Nehrim. Looks amazing. Instantly began downloading.

Will wait to see how it plays, but thank you much for the reference.

OT, I'd say for me it's a toss up between the Morrowind Overhaul and the Star Wars mod for Sins of a Solar Empire. Morrowind Overhaul modernizes the textures and effects of Morrowind so well that it looks like it was released around the same time Oblivion was. And it accomplishes it without changing or harming the sense of culture of Vvardenfell.

The Star Wars mod for Sins is pretty basic, but it's done really well and was good enough to encourage me to learn to use the system. For a game with no campaign, I've put a lot of hours into it.
