haha Reading some of the titles mentioned I do wonder how mondern gamers would go. Some of these were made way before the advent of the minimap so you will have to break out the graph paper and pencils :)
Most of them would probably go to Gamefaqs first, sadly.

No one has mentioned Neverwinter Nights yet? It's one of my personal favorites. If you can, get it with the expansion packs Hordes of the Underdark and Shadows of Undrentide - gives a bunch of new classes and raises the level-cap. HotU has the best plot, the other two may seem a bit lackluster in comparison.

Planescape Torment has a fantastic story and amazing writing, but for my money, I'd go with Baldur's Gate to. Awesome characters (Minsc and Boo!!!), epic scope, tons of intersting missions, a great villain, believable world and everything great about the old school CRPG's.

This was Bioware long before EA came into the picture.

I absolutely love Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines. It's a bit (sometimes very) clunky, yes, and I strongly advise you to get the latest unofficial patch before playing. But it has a beautifully crafted atmosphere and the story is really interesting. You don't "level up" you just get experience points to spend however you wish. I'm surprised we don't see that more often. Almost every mission have different solutions, and the game isn't all up in your face with them. If you want to be sneaky, you have got to search for an alternate route or backdoor etc.

Oh, and it has Malkavians. I love those nutbars.

Since just about everything else has been recommended, I'll recommend To The Moon. Yet again.
It's only a short indie RPG, about 4 and a half hours long when I played through it, and lacking in combat, although it doesn't suffer because of that.
It has a great story, and just about everyone I have seen play it has a good opinion of it.
A good, emotional game.
And you can get it cheap on Steam.
Sure, some people might say it isn't an RPG because it lacks combat and loot, but feth them, it's a good game anyway.

I would say that you absolutely need the unofficial patch. I wasn't even able to get the game running before I installed it. The patch is a must.
