I think emerald was the best, I found it much more fun for some reason, I guess because of the story and towns which were more interesting in my opinion, plus it had the battle fronteir for the first time.

I've played Red and Blue, completed both. I will forever cherish them for providing the framework for the rest of the franchise.

Black and White completely and utterly destroy them. I'm convinced that Black and White are, as of now, the best Pokemon games of all time.

What makes you say that they are the best? :)

Blue version, first one I played and didn't figure out how to use Poke balls till the first cave, resulting in me having a wartortle, zubat, and geodude as my first three pokemon

I know I said White earlier, and I'm sticking to that, but I feel like HG/SS deserve some credit for all of the touch screen functionality and the awesome ability to have Pokemon follow you around.

Edit: I know Yellow did it first, but Garchomp>Pikachu.

I'm gonna be a rebel and say Pearl (Though, if I had gotten Platinum, too, I would have probably preferred that.) Gen IV is where Nintendo really got their shit together, I think. Like B/W, the major focus is on the new Pokes, but unlike FR/LG and B/W, the game doesn't limit you to a ridiculously small, unvaried, mediocre selection for your main storyline team. Sure, B/W has re-usable TMs and the new Battle set-ups, but D/P absolutely revolutionized the battle scheme with the physical/special split, HG/SS has the best controls (with the Touch Screen serving as a near-perfect substitute for the right hand buttons), and the movement to DS graphics and music blew me away.

Oh, and the items... I really miss the 2-Speed Bike, Underground Kit, Poketch, EV held items, and especially the VS. Seeker. B/W has an odd obsession with multiplayer (C-Gear, Entralink, Dream World, IR, Local Wireless) that doesn't fit a 1-player RPG, and even significantly impedes what the game could have been (namely, because the C-Gear renders the Touch Screen, so useful in HG/SS, totally POINTLESS.) Also, the main game in B/W, even including the post-Ghetsis stuff, is far too short.

So, by Generation, I'd say IV > II > III > V > I.

Higher quality music (although some Red and Blue songs still have a place in my heart). A lot of creative Pokemon. New type combinations. A huge variety of teams. Tons of strategy that isn't just "Spam Psychic". More balanced. Interesting story. Challenging main game. Interesting characters. Cool scenery. Much better graphics. Interesting gym puzzles. Getting rid of the low health siren. Creative city/town names. Creative cities and towns. Lots of flavor text. Unique cries. Animated sprites. Weather window. Wonder launcher. Triple Battles. Not needing a Pokemon Center to battle or trade. Entralink. Random Wi-fi battles.

And much more I couldn't think of.

Leaf Green/Fire red. It was pretty fun, if a bit easy. I breezed through all of the gym leaders with virtually no grinding. The only one I had trouble with was Koga, but that was just because his Muk would spam evasion boosts.

Gold, if only for that one trainer in Goldenrod City who will trade you a Machop for a Drowzee. That Machop, whose name is Muscle saw me through every single hard time imaginable, and was the top of my party (as a Machamp) alongside my Dragonite name STUVY. Along with my Ho-oh, Lugia, and Typhlosion, my team was so unstoppable and awesome that I still look upon them proudly for their impeccable service to my Pokemon fanhood.

Probably either Red/Blue or Gold/Silver.

Red was my life back in the day, so it remains my overall choice purely for nostalgic purposes, but also because it's still a kickass game after all these years.

Red and Blue.
Yeah it looked dull back then compared to Black and White, but they were fresh and quite possibly the most addictive of the lot.

Yellow was also awesome.

If possible, i'd like to see the Gym and Champion/Victory Road/Elite Four battles on the 3DS Pokemon games go into a Pokemon Stadium style view.
