I bought Shadow of Rome off eBay earlier this week and got it in the mail a few days ago. Haven't played it too much but it's quite a lot of fun so far, combat is great and the stealth sections aren't too bad.
Wait 'til you start learning those moves. F-me it gets exciting!

The Jak series minus Jak X is awesome as well as Destroy all humans 1 and Star Wars Battlefront 2.

EDIT: I seem to have started a flood of threads about old consoles. Damn I love trends... Now I just have to wait for my ellipses to catch on...

If you like GTA-style open world games, I highly recommend Destroy All Humans! 2, and Mercenaries 1. These games have sequels for current-gen consoles, but the PS2 games are far superior.

In fact, Destroy All Humans! 2 also has RPG elements, and stealth/building climbing elements, so get that game and you're pretty set. It helps that the dialogue is hilarious.

Hmm, I think I'm forgetting something here. Oh yeah!

The Jak series
Silent Hill 2
Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 (3 is my personal favourite)
Devil May Cry

Shadow of the Colossus (durrr), God of War (one of the few games I've been motivated to play through again on a harder mode), all that Jak and Ratchet & Clank nonsense...I've also had some good times with DBZ Budokai 3.

Yeah I bought that game thinking it would be epic, but when I played it for about and hour straight I didn't understand one thing and didnt even fight one boss. I ended up selling it, then about 3 months later I see IGN having it in the 10 games of all time -_-. FML.
The first colossus is literally a ten second horse ride from the temple.

I must've went the total opposite way then :(

Survival Horror:

-Silent Hill 2 (Director's Cut or no)
-Resident Evil 4

Shooter:

-TimeSplitters - watch out though, really old school.
-TimeSplitters 2
-TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
-Red Faction
-Red Faction 2
-Killer7
-Transformers

Platformer:

-Jak & Daxter
-Jak II: Renegade
-Jak 3
-Ratchet & Clank
-Ratchet & Clank 2
-Ratchet & Clank 3
-Ratchet & Clank Gladiator (or Deadlocked in the US) - my opinion, not as good as its preceders.
-Sly Raccoon
-Sly Raccoon 2
-Slay Raccoon 3
-Rayman Revolution - watch out though, really old school.
-Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
-Maximo
-Maximo And The Army Of Zin
-Psychonauts

Action/adventure:

-Devil May Cry
-Devil May Cry 3 (Special Edition or no)
-God Of War
-God Of War II
-GTA: San Andreas
-ICO
-Shadow Of The Colossus
-Viewtiful Joe
-Viewtiful Joe 2
-Zone of the Enders
-Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
-Okami

jRPG:

-Final Fantasy X
-Final Fantasy XII - Maybe, if you want something that looks a bit more like an offline MMO.
-Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call - Offers a challenge and is a MUST for every self-respecting jRPG player.
-Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga
-Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2
-Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
-Persona 4
-Shadow Hearts - Watch out though, really old school.
-Shadow Hearts: Covenant - Want a good jRPG? Here you go!
-Dragon Quest: The Journey Of The Cursed King - Contains many old school elements.

Puzzle:

-Bombastic
-Wetrix 2.0: Aqua Aqua

Music/misc.:

-Rez
-freQuency - not for everyone.
-Amplitude - sequel to freQuency, so not for everyone either.

Beat 'em up:
-Soul Calibur II - SC III too, I suppose, if you really dig it, but it's a big rehash.
-Tekken 5 - Tekken Tag Tournament and Tekken 4 too, I suppose, but they're really the same, just worse.

Racing/car combat:

-Burnout: Revenge
-Twisted Metal Black
-Mashed (Fully Loaded or no) - Play with friends or don't play at all.

What I would recommend from my collection.
Make sure to check out 2nd hand games (in stores or online), bargain bins and platinum titles. With a bit of luck and financial insight, you can get 6 PS2 games for the price of one PS3 title.

Also, I don't play sport games except for the ol' Tony Hawk games, so no advice on that.

Deus EX and Deus EX: Invisible war

These are RPGs but not an adventure however if you are into (have an interest)in political/military conspiracies this is a game for you, this is more about the storyline rather than the actual game play

You're missing several game series like Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Splinter Cell, Hitman all great selections you will thoroughly enjoy.

Hmm... I'd recommend Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Silent Hill 2 (everyone needs to play it once), Psychonauts (see note for SH2), and the Sly Cooper series.

Since I have yet to meet anyone my age (20ish) that has even heard of the Sly Cooper series. Its a series of E-rated games that are actually pretty good. Sure, you spend most of the series playing as a cartoon Racoon that steals from other criminals, but like Psychonauts, its humor does get genuinely funny at times. And the gameplay... well... the first game was a bit like Super Mario in the sense that at most, you'd have three hits before you'd lose a life, lose all of the lives you've collected (you can get up to 99 of them by collecting enough coins), you have to start the level all over again. But just try it. The first game isn't really open-world (the game just tells itself that it is), but the other two games in the series are open-world. And sure, its all cartoonish, but that's the whole point.
Oh, and if anyone was wondering... the Sly Cooper series is what Sucker Punch was doing before they made Infamous.

EDIT:
Oh of course! How could I have forgotten Okami. Seriously, just fucking play it already.

Damn straight.

I also recommend you find San Andreas to go with Vice City.
Tons of fun.
Damn, Damn straight.
I'm glad I didn't have to scroll far to see the San Andreas suggestion. That's one of my favorite three ps2 games; the others being Burnout Revenge and Katamari.

OP.
Definitely San Andreas. You'll probably also like the Burnout (3 & Revenge) games: not your usual racing games. Check out Katamari if you're looking for something weird and unique but I'm not sure if you'll like it.

You'll probably also dig the Godfather Mercenaries and True Crime games. They aren't as good as the ps2 era gta games but worth checking out. And while it isn't as well fleshed out as these others, I always got a kick out of Nark: some really weird powerups in that one.

I would have to say Kingdom Hearts 1 or 2. Kingdom Hearts is one of my favorite game series of all time and it would defiantly be a good purchase.
This.

Kingdom Hearts is awesome. Also Final Fantasy VII and or X.
