Alright so I've been wanting a great racing game that isn't too hard to get into for awhile now. Can anyone tell me what the best one to get is?

Oh, and it has to be on either the XBOX 360 or PS2 as I don't have a PS3

Carmageddon.

I don't know if you can get it on PS2/Xbox 360 because it's a fairly old game, but goddamn you better get it.

Have you tried NFS: Shift? I have it on PC with a wheel and it is a lot of fun and pretty adjustable between Sim-ness and Arcadey-ness. It also has that Skinner box vehicle upgrade system which I am an all out sucker for.

Burnout 3: Takedown.

It's seriously the best racing game out there. The emphasis is more on causing massive pile-ups & murdering the other drivers, but there are races in it.

So, so fucking good.
i've heard alot of good things about Burnout. is number 3 the best?

Burnout is a great series overall. I recommend Burnout 2 as a starting point, Burnout 3 was definitely good but Burnout 2 set the stage for crash junctions.

alright so what about like...the hyper realistic games like Forza and Grand Tourismo?
It largely depends on your taste in racing games - I have a friend who really likes the more 'arcadey' ones (Burnout, NFS, Project Gotham) who can't stand Forza or GT.

If you like the more 'simulationy' racing games, I have both Forza 3 and GT5, and I much prefer Forza - although it's hard to say how much of that is down to the fact that I simply don't like the PS3's controller.

I almost snorted my tea. None of those are hyper realistic in any way. Sadly though, those are as realistic as it gets on console. Don't get me wrong though, I do love my GT5 to bits. It's just not a true sim.
If you're after real sims, go for the PC: Live for Speed [www.lfs.net], rFactor [http://www.rfactor.net/], iRacing [http://www.iracing.com/] or NetKar Pro [http://www.netkar-pro.com/] are great.

And there is a little obscure gem for the PS2: Enthusia. While not as graphically polished or as huge contentwise as GT4, it's driving physics is really great.

well ya i meant hyper realistic as far as standard racing games are concerned, like as opposed to the more "arcade" style ones. and i'll have to try out that Enthusia game, thanks for the tip :)

RC Revenge Pro. To this day I have never played a more fun racer. It's for PS2, and I just picked it up again out of nostalgia for $3. It is still really, really good, even when discounting the nostalgia factor. It's just so well designed. There's also a track builder with a MASSIVE memory limit! :D

Ps2 has all the best racing games.

Flatout 2 for the ps2 is the best racing game I know. You race rusty muscle cars, slick sports cars and pickup trucks in the woods, in the desert, on race tracks and city streets and wreck the shit out of your rivals, get into spectacular crashes and plow through the scenery.

There's also Burnout 3 and Need for Speed Most Wanted.

Again I'm coming from a PC perspective but despite it's flaws F1 2010 is a really fun racer that straddles the sim and arcade genre's. If you're not a fan of open-wheeled racing it's probably best avoided.

I love NFS: Most Wanted, you basically work your way up a "The Blacklist" becoming more notorious until your number 1! Great fun, and my favourite NFS ever. Though Hot Pursuit is pretty awesome.

Forza Motorsport 3 is my favorite racing game, but games like Test Drive Unlimited and Burnout are always fun for me.

No body has recommended any Rally games, so I'm gonna say WRC 4. Lots of tracks, good handling and controls, and looks pretty good for PS2. It can be quite hard at first but very rewarding and fun to play.

Burnout 2 point of impact was really nice, it's MUCH more difficult than Burnout 3 though.

I think Burnout 3 and burnout 2 are very different though, I don't think I found anything frustrating in Burnout 3 *cough* crashing in a custom cup means losing a race *cough*

I like burnout 2 though since it's a much bigger challenge. Just... no crashing into other enemy cars, and it's really easy to crash in races. Also, crash mode on both games is VERY good.
