A lot of Philip K. Dick's novels...If I had to choose though, It'd probably have to be A Scanner Darkly.

Although that's coming from someone who hasn't touched his copies of Dune or Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy yet.
Guilty as well. Scarcely ever in the mood for humorous novels. Don't have much of an excuse for not having read Dune, though.

The Forever War.

An excellent book that continues to be relevant even after the war is was inspired by ended decades ago.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, with 2001: A Space Odyssey and Rendezvous with Rama tied for second.
Damn ninja'd I challenge anyone to find a better Sci-Fi than Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

If I had to chose a second though I'd say A Scanner Darkly, Man In The High Tower, or Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy .

Well the best sci-fi books I have ever read are Ender's game, Hyperion series and the original Foundation series.

All awesome.

Streets of Avelon (I think thats what its called) is short but so deliciously tragically true you may feel like crying by the end.

Hmm. Tough question. Let me see.

*peruses his collection of novels from Chrichton, Asimov, Tolkien, Rowling, Herbert, King, Verne, Wells, Clarke, Sagan, K. Dick, Vinge, and others

Nope. Can't pick a favorite. They're all amazing. The sad part is, even though some of the best science fiction and fantasy writers are also some of the greatest writers in history, most don't get that kind of recognition. Namely, because far too many people view those genres as a childish or "nerdy".

But you know what? To hell with those people. Some of the greatest stories I've ever read were based in science fiction and fantasy.

I'd definitely say Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
Shit, I completely forgot about this...

*ponders momentarily*

...nope, A Scanner Darkly for sure.

Ha, I guess. I only bought it recently (£3, brand new) and I have SOOOOO much to read before I can even think of attacking Dune. Plus, I'm not a huge fan of the hard sci-fi stuff.... Which is why [i[A Scanner Darkly[/i] is one of my personal favourites, I guess.

Douglas Adams' Starship Titanic. By Terry Jones.

This is the book that inspired me to learn English - I didn't want to wait until it came out in Norwegian. (Good call, as I'm pretty sure it never did.) I found it to be well worth the effort, not only because it was insanely good (laugh-out-loud hilarious AND genuinely suspenseful), but also because English-language books are WAAAY cheaper than Norwegian ones!

I think this thread qualifies as a list of suggestions. I like mine, personally.

The first 4 Dune books are amazing, Heratics and Chapterhouse of Dune are good but theres no resolution and no the books written by his son doesn't count.

VALIS by Philip K. Dick and The Atrocity Exhibition by J.G. Ballard are my two favourite novels by science-fiction authors, though the works themselves are very difficult to classify in terms of genre.

Way to end the thread right out of the starting gates.

That said, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is amazing.
Wait a minute...

I really loved I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream but that's a short story.
I agree, it's a brilliant short story and one of my favorite short stories from him.

OT: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is pretty damn awesome.
