I need to get my star wars fix on and I want to check out some original content.
What star wars games not directly based on the movies have the best stories.
No open-ended mmorpgs.
They can have movie chars in, but no direct movies. get me?
Looking for the best stories in SW games.

Thanks for suggestions!

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Isn't big on story, but the story is unique to it.

TIE Fighter and Dark Forces, 100%
And to a lesser extent, X-Wing and X-Wing Alliance.

Does it count though? Barely any missions relate to the ones before. There's no cutscenes between missions, no character development, it's just 'target for today' over and over. I do still love it to bits as a game though.

There's also Republic Commando, and even a decent story driven campaign in Star Wars Battlefront 2 (the REAL one, not that EA shite from 2017).

Well, they said "best original story games," not "best original stories."

But that aside, that's selling Rogue Squadron slightly short. Kasen Moor does get some character development, in that she needs to earn Rogue Squadron's trust (which happens quickly, granted), and there is the antagonism between her and Moff Seerdon. Also, from the fifth mission onward, some missions do link to one another, though it's very much story in the background.

KotoR is considered the best story, but I might also recommend the Jedi Knight games. Jedi Starfighter and Bounty Hunter have new plots set in the Prequel era but haven't played those.

I'd throw my hat in the ring for both KOTOR games, although to get the best KOTOR 2 experience, you need to play it on PC with the Restored Content mod.

TIE Fighter. To date still one of the best(and sadly few) games where you play from the bad guys perspective and totally pulls it off. No defection to the good guys(Fuck you, Battlefront 2) while still showing how the average Imperial soldier could reasonably see themselves on the right side of the conflict.

THe way many of the campaigns were a tightly connected set of missions to create a sense of urgency helped a lot. Even though mission assets didn't actually carry over from one to the next(unlike Homeworld), it sometimes felt like you were flying a mission, returning to the command ship for a quick rearm/refuel/briefing before going right back out again to continue the fight.

If you can take the MMO combat the stories in SWTOR are fun in a pulp adventure sort of way.
Eh, MMO combat is probably the least of its issues. When last I'd played, the game had been reworked to the point that pretty much everything other than world bosses were easily soloable so long as you had your NPC companion on the appropriate setting (usually healer unless you were playing as a healer) and had the story-mode Flashpoint companion out for Flashpoints.

The point that I'd be cautioning people about is how SWTOR is...pretty obnoxious about "subscribe already!" annoyances, and that the planets tend to drag. This is not to say that there aren't some good stories in there (I particularly liked some of the moments in the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion), just that there are probably more egregious aspects of the game that would turn off a new player, especially if they opt for the free to play experience (general advice being to subscribe for a month so that after the subscription ends you'll still have the Expansions and be at Preferred status...which is still limited but more tolerable than the F2P restrictions).

Yes but if they do the Free to Play option first then they can decide on the whether they like the writing and the gameplay. After that they can look at getting subscriber/preferred status to remove said annoyances.

I always enjoyed playing Shadows of the Empire when I was a kid, I never got far but the opening Hoth stage made a big impression on me and I would've enjoyed playing more of a game like that where you have to complete unique tasks in Star Wars vehicles. It was for the N64 but I'm sure there are... ways of playing it.

Naturally. My point was simply that a new player should go in knowing that SWTOR's internal marketing strategy is liable to cause a lot of frustration.

It is without question X-Wing. Not much story in-game actually, unless you had the original Prima Games strategy guide. In which "The Farlander Papers" read more like one of the good EU novels rather than a game guide. The guide gave you the backstory plus action report from each of the missions. It made X-Wing the best Star Wars video game story... that really doesn't exist unless you bought the strategy guide. They attempted to replicate the feat in TIE Fighter and Alliance, but in each one they did a better job integrating the story into the game itself. And my opinion is the quality of the story suffered somewhat from what they had done with X-Wing. It's kind of an unfair advantage though, books are generally considered a better medium for delivering narrative rather than video games. Otherwise I might give the advantage to KOTOR, as RPG's generally are generally one of the best genres for delivering good narrative. But it is very wizard and lasersword oriented and, as evidenced by my referring to it as such, that is my least favorite aspect of the Star Wars story... the Jedi stuff. I do admit KOTOR and its sequel had pretty compelling stories... but gimme less glow-stick wire-fu and more pilots and space battles any day.
