If you can take the MMO combat the stories in SWTOR are fun in a pulp adventure sort of way.
Eh, MMO combat is probably the least of its issues. When last I'd played, the game had been reworked to the point that pretty much everything other than world bosses were easily soloable so long as you had your NPC companion on the appropriate setting (usually healer unless you were playing as a healer) and had the story-mode Flashpoint companion out for Flashpoints.
The point that I'd be cautioning people about is how SWTOR is...pretty obnoxious about "subscribe already!" annoyances, and that the planets tend to drag. This is not to say that there aren't some good stories in there (I particularly liked some of the moments in the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion), just that there are probably more egregious aspects of the game that would turn off a new player,
especially if they opt for the free to play experience (general advice being to subscribe for a month so that after the subscription ends you'll still have the Expansions and be at Preferred status...which is still limited but more tolerable than the F2P restrictions).
