If you can take the MMO combat the stories in SWTOR are fun in a pulp adventure sort of way.
Eh, MMO combat is probably the least of its issues. When last I'd played, the game had been reworked to the point that pretty much everything other than world bosses were easily soloable so long as you had your NPC companion on the appropriate setting (usually healer unless you were playing as a healer) and had the story-mode Flashpoint companion out for Flashpoints.

The point that I'd be cautioning people about is how SWTOR is...pretty obnoxious about "subscribe already!" annoyances, and that the planets tend to drag. This is not to say that there aren't some good stories in there (I particularly liked some of the moments in the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion), just that there are probably more egregious aspects of the game that would turn off a new player, especially if they opt for the free to play experience (general advice being to subscribe for a month so that after the subscription ends you'll still have the Expansions and be at Preferred status...which is still limited but more tolerable than the F2P restrictions).
Yes but if they do the Free to Play option first then they can decide on the whether they like the writing and the gameplay. After that they can look at getting subscriber/preferred status to remove said annoyances.
Naturally. My point was simply that a new player should go in knowing that SWTOR's internal marketing strategy is liable to cause a lot of frustration.
Agreed.....also if they go they should roll Jedi Guardian, cos those fuckers just wreck shit up :D
Plus the Knight's storyline is more or less KoTOR 3, and arguably carries best into the expansions if they ever get around to them. That said, I did love my snarky Lightside Sith Warrior. Most of the surrounding cast (outside the crew, of course) assume him to be a dumb brute, but he's usually the most levelheaded person in the room and comes off as just done with the shortsighted idiots he constantly finds himself surrounded by.
