Because of my recent viewing of The Dark Knight Rises, I've found myself becoming more interested in comic books, their mythologies, etc. And since there's going to be a reboot of the Superman film franchise in 2013 named Man of Steel, I figured that I should start with the original superhero himself: Superman.

I know that the character gets a lot of flack for being an overpowered Mary Sue, but I want to know for myself. I know about the first two Superman films (I won't bother with the last two, judging by their reputation and the fact that getting all four will cost too much for me currently), and I'll probably pick them up at HMV sometime.

But what are the best Superman comic books/graphic novels were to buy. Where should I start?

All-Star Superman is a brilliant take on the character, but you need a bit of background knowledge first.

Yet again the ignorant lead people astray. Superman isn't a Mary-Sue. At least, not anymore. Batman is a Mary-Sue of epic proportions and Superman has a line of villains that are ridiculously powerful. But n'aww, I'd go with Justice League comics instead; it pays to contrast him with other heroes.

Danm ninja I was going to say that! Well either way I agreed since it capture the character perfectly and the artstyle is fantastic too!

Once you're a bit more well versed in Superman lore, and DCU lore, for that matter, you should definitely pick up Red Son, a very interesting take on the Superman character.
