The 'best' survival horror games I've come across tend to focus more on story and character development then gender and such. When you take aim at "We need a female protagonist" thing too hard, you end up with a less than stellar game where the character's personality is either off, poorly handled, or just bad.
In most of the better survival horror games I've played that are really good the gender of the MC changes from time and place to give you more of a feel of the story. Best example I can think of off the top of my head are those Fatal Frame games where most of the main character cast are female.
Best advice I can tell you is find good games, and worry about who you're playing as later. Otherwise you end up with an interchangeable character who isn't very interesting. Also Clock Tower isn't too bad if you're into that sort of thing and willing to back off the god awful graphics and dialogue that comes with being an older game.
