Bioshock, for me, was fucking incredible. Although, Sons Of Liberty probably trumps the shit out of it. But at the same time, I have a huge nostalgic soft-spot for Final Fantasy VIII's opening. At 11, it was the greatest thing i had ever seen. I took it around all my friend's houses and clicked NEW GAME over and over again until i'd probably watched that opening intro longer than i'd actually played the game.
The original Legend of Zelda. First there is a pretty title screen. Then you are plopped into a valley with no directions whatsoever, free to decide where you want to go on your own (but with a very subtle hint as to what you should probably do first.)
It depends on what you mean by 'opening' really. Do you mean the entire first level, the point up to where the player is allowed to actually 'play' (as in, you can walk around and such, but not shoot or do anything too important, like in Bioshock's opening), or do you just mean the opening cutscene?
If it's the first level, I'd have Mass Effect 2, which would also be my choice if it's up to the point you can actually play. Mainly because it just feels fairly immersive to me. I remember
walking through the broken Normandy, looking up at the planet floating above as I made my way to joker.
The close second would be Bioshock.
If it's just the first cutscene, I'd say Alan Wake, as it set the mood fairly well I think.
Ninja'd. And really, pick any Fallout game---even though it's basically three different takes on the same refrain (I'm not counting the canon fail from Fallout Tactics), it's three AWESOME takes.
BioShock has, in my opinion, one of the greatest intros of ANY medium. Andrew Ryan's monologue is just delicious.
In terms of truly playable intros, Mass Effect 2 set the tone right off by blowing up the ship that I'd come to love in the first game and then blowing me off into space.
Honorable mentions include the Half-Life games, Fallout 3's opening shot, and a few others that I'll remember later.
