It's not pronounced exactly like Yahtzee. Yasi...say it with me, Yar-sea...YAR-SEA.
How/why is there a silent r in this word?

I'd never pronounce it YAR-SEA if we were going for phonetics. Not to mention it sounds like a pirate hooker.

Black widows, rattlesnakes, brown recluse, earthquakes, annual forest fires, mudslides, still not as bad as Australia.
So I take it you're a fellow Californian?

From what I've heard, possums are far scarier in the Americas. Our possums are all cute and fluffy (aside from the truly daemonic noise they make when in the tree next to your tent at night). And the Thylacine is still pretty cute, it's basically a marsupial wolf (but smaller). Imagine it's babies. Just little, stripy puppies with pockets in the front.

Asie from that, yeah, our animals are pretty messed up. Though the octopus example could be better. Just look up the blue-ringed octopus.

Best of luck to Bruce and his fellow Bruces; although, if that storm has any common sense it'll leave quickly, lest it attract the attention of their cuddly and oh-so-poisonous wildlife.

Its Cairns thats being hit the worst! I'm so lucky being tucked away in New Zealand. Seriously Australia is being hit so hard with natural disasters and all Christchurch (nz) got is a 7.1 earthquake. Is that all you got mother nature?
Interestingly enough, my aunt (who was born here in the UK) emigrated to Auckland some years ago and now lives in Christchurch. She's a nurse at a mental clinic, and she was actually there in the middle of the earthquake. Fortunately she and her family were fine, but she had to help get all the patients out and to safety in case of aftershocks and such...

Anyway, regarding the OP, I give my sympathies and whatnot to all of Australia, and all of Queensland, not just Yahtzee, but of course I give them to Yahtzee as well. However, I'm just curious as to why people feel the need to post threads like this when at the end of the day, Yahtzee is a man. A late-twenties English man with a very fast voice and a sarcastic sense of humour. Nothing more. Fine, we all agree he's awesome, but does he really need fanboys and stalker-ish actions like this? Really? I like the guy, but he's a minor internet celebrity, not the Australian Prime Minister. Seriously, people...
I would like to point out even if he was the Australian Prime Minister, he would still just be some guy.

Not sure if he is in Queensland, but cyclone Yasi has just hit (oddly enough, the word is pronounced similarly to Yahtzee), and is apparently the most dangerous cyclone to hit Australia ever.

Aussies can't catch a break eh?

Yes, Yahtzee is in Brisbane, the capitol of Queensland, but the thing about Queensland, and in fact all of the 7 states/territories in Australia, is that it's huge. Also, most of Australia is so hot that no sane person would want to live there, hence Brisbane, being the thriving metropolis that it is *cough*, is right down near the southern border of Queensland, as far away from steamy Mr. Equator as possible. Cyclone Yasi on the other hand is bearing down on Cairns, which is quite a nice small city in Northern Queensland. With beautiful, tropical, sandy, jellyfish and crocodile infested beaches. The distance between Brissie and Cairns is, in fact, close to the distance between Tijuana and the northern border of California (seriously, Australian states make American States look tiny). So as far as the cyclone goes, I think Yahtzee will be ok.

I terms of Australia in general getting the finger from Mother Nature, we have so far had (and I'm not joking):

Floods,
Bushfires,
Thunderstorms,
Heat waves (40 degrees C),
Locust plagues,
More floods,
and now a cyclone...

And it's only February.

As a fellow Brisbanite, i can assure you all unless yahtzee decided he wanted to defy evacuation orders and head north for a couple of days he's absolutely fine. I woke up this morning to Beautiful cloud free blue skies and a nice 28 degree (celcius) temperature with a little bit of humidity and no wind. (Although looking out the window now i see a bit of cloud cover so hopefully we'll get a shower or two).
You should have been far more worried about him during the floods two weeks ago.

For the Americans with their tiny states :p Brisbane is about three days drive from Cairns. 1,681 km - about 22 hours all up. (And cairns is only halfway up the queensland coast, anywhere north of cairns is only dirt tracks and etc so it takes close to two weeks to drive the queensland coast from brisbane to the top, i went with family friends as a kid.)

Scarecrow is correct, i thought is was pronounced 'yazi' personally also however i was corrected by ms Anna Bligh (our premier) when i turned on the tv last night. For some reason they want to make us sound like pirates, so 'yar-sea' it is.

Obviously, since pretty much any animal on that Continent/Country/Island can kill you.

Anyway yeah, wishes of safety and good luck to Queensland.

We already did the locust plague. Think it's still going, actually. That and we had bad bushfires recently.

Ausie wildlife isn't all bad :p we also have Koala's which are adorable little drug addicts (they spend 20 hrs a day sleping because their staple diet makes them high), Flying Foxes which are also adorable and Fairy Penguins which i think speak for themselves.

Queensland (and other states) also have some of the most amazingly beautiful places in the world, aka Daintree Rainforest, Great Barrier Reef, Whitsundays, So it's a definite worthy trade off. :)

all of those things in that helpful graph. Glad I'm in North Carolina, where the only thing I have to deal with is the occasional tornado.
Yeah, I live in Southern England.... the most dangerous weather we get is rain persistent enough to cause depression....

As others have stated, Brisbane is a long way from the cyclone. Definitely no need for anyone to be worrying about yahtzee =D

Luckily there have been no reported deaths so far, I've seen on the news there has been a fair bit of devastation to so smaller communities in North Queensland though.
