I finally got around to playing the original Deus Ex, and after getting through the mess of an opening mission, I really got into it, great story and setting, and all this UN stuff. Then comes the bit where the *twist* happens.

SPOILERS btw...
************************************************

SO yeah the brother and all that.

I chose to stay where I was with the UN, I was like, shoot that guy on the plane in the head- hell yeah! I was all like, I am so going to kill that brother turn-terrorist of mine, BUT no!
I game decided that I wasnt allowed to make that decision and FORCED me to betray the UN.
What the hell?!

Im still enjoying the game, I just expected I would be allowed to make that decision...

...It appears that spoiler tags are not working for me in this new layout. I click but nothing happens. So, er, I can't... actually respond to what I can't see.

Well you end up betraying the UN no matter what you do, it's a very important part of the story. Plus that guy also dies no matter what you do. If you choose to not kill him he gives you some interesting info about your past, but then Navarre kills him anyway.

That did kind of annoy me too... I would have been quite happy to keep working for the UN. Of course... then there wouldn't be much of a game, would there?

GRR. This new layout is not working for me. Still can't see under the spoiler tag. I suppose it may just me, but the problem only JUST started up.

Anyway. iJosh, yeah, the game is intense. It gave me much more freedom than I realized a game would ever give me in weird little ways... I mean, in a case where the game told you to go do one thing, everyone's telling you to do one thing, you can do another. You don't get one of those annoying "But I could totally do that and avoid this crap, why won't you let me?!" moments.

...I would elaborate, but again, spoiler tags appear to hate me now.

If you're talking about what I THINK you're talking about, then yeah, they didn't give you that choice... But that would hamstring the plot a bit.

Actually, it is possible to let them all live :) I'll try to find a guide for it somewhere. Watch this post

The same walkthrough tells you how to do it without killing humans (Of course, knocking them out isn't killing them)... Excluding those who blow up

Well they could have designed the plot at the point a little, better, like I had next to nothing to go on, only their word, and some mean looking allies with russian accents, THAT DOESNT MAKE EM EVIL... honestly I wasnt convinced... it just politics...ugh I guess Im not far enough into the game to really see that JC has made the right choice for me...

Still for a game that is mean to be all about choice...

You are never given the order to kill your brother, at least not that I can remember. You are ordered to kill that other guy on the plane, which you can disobey even though it makes no difference, but you aren't considered a betrayer to the UNATCO until the next level. You will have no choice then, since Jock brings you to Hell's Kitchen and won't take you away til you speak with Paul. Even if you didn't want to betray at that point they will see you meeting with your brother as an act of disobedience and bring you in.

Heh, yeah I remember many moons ago when I played the game and did the exact same thing as you did.
It pissed me off when you were forced to turn against the UN.
The logical reason for this would be that the designers would have had to make two drastic turns in the game resulting in two routes that would (most likely) be half the length and possibly lesser quality than if they forced you in this respect and then made the rest of the game excellent.

It's a small price to pay for an excellent rest of the game, if my memory serves me right Hong Kong is coming up. That is my favourite place in the game because the game only takes you around... maybe half of the available area so it is VERY open to exploration and you always find loads of secret areas with item stashes.

...neither spoilers nor quotes are working goddamnit...

...anyway; @the_tramp, but do the accents not grate? The actual level's awesome, but just... the voice acting. It's horrendous.

When Alex tells you to leave him and get out of the apartment, you can actually stay and fight off the MIBs. If you do, eventually Alex gets up and helps you fight out of the apartment building. Then when you get captured, a live Alex is in the infirmary instead of his body, and he'll pop up occasionally throughout the rest of the game.

Just thought I'd let you know...there are a few seemingly railroaded sections that actually can be reversed.

Not true, you can actually kill Navarre there instead, and UNATCO all go WTF at you when you go back, heh.

I agree with you though Sneaklemming, they could've done it better; made it more obvious who was in the right and wrong. If I remember it's just a datacube thingy in the basement that has attached documents (which you dont get to see) which have the incriminating evidence on. I guess you're just supposed to take it for granted that those documents are there and that he's right

...there was another one. When you're
forced to get captured and put into the prison cell. The fact that Gunther was actually invincible annoyed me.

Well... After that what next?
If memory serves, you were kind of surrounded by those giant metal walking tin cans and those barriers that for some reason you just can't jump over

Actually, you can let both Navarre and that guy, whoever he was, live.
If you keep shooting Navarre long enough for her health to run dangerously low, she will run away. Just don´t kill her too much.
I´ve managed to play the whole game through without killing anyone. Fun game, absolutely magnificent.

You were stuck on an Island for christs sake. You'd need some kinda helicopter pilot who was sympathetic to your cause or something...
