OT: I do matched betting, arbitrage and sports trading for a living (basically just maths really). Though on top of the money I was going to make on a trade yesterday I had best odds guaranteed kick in on the bookie side which added an extra £40 to the account that I wasn't expecting.
Other than doing my work where it's all controlled and calculated I'm actually a terrible normal gambler, I hate to bet on things where the outcome isn't hedged because 9 times out of 10 it'll somehow go against you.
I've placed probably hundreds bets in the last 4 months and the amount of odds on favourites I've seen come not even close is remarkable, even if a horse is racing against absolute donkeys it can still be a flip of the coin whether it'll win.
Exceptions being Sprinter Sacre of course..

Had a crack at sports betting last year, wasn't good at it, quit down a hundred. I'm up lifetime betting on professional wrestling though, ditto for Superbowl prop bets (though Alicia Keys cost me money this year - had the under on 2:10 for the national anthem length and she went at least 2:30...)
Only play the pokies (slot machines) very occasionally, when drinking with friends, have had a couple of lucky scores for a couple hundred bucks. Usually just paid for drinks for the rest of the night

I'll make a few bets every round of the AFL season and during the NBA and NFL regular seasons I was cleaning up there (turned AU$50 into over AU$3000) and as the Australian gambling culture is much the same as our drinking culture (in that we don't give a fuck) I'll often put a few bets on a horse of dog at the TAB while I'm at the pub. I've got too many stories to tell about big wins at a casino, or a loss because another person at the table was retarded.
This. While I understand the attraction of gambling I never been able to see why people are willing to part with the money that they have earned for a sum that they most likely won't get and in the end losing the money that they worked hard to earn. Sure a few people will make it but it seems better to work and save up your money. I know that many jobs don't pay much but which is better: to save up slowly or to lose your money off of a very long bet?LongAndShort said:

I tend to only bet/gamble when I'm at a casino. I was in Vegas last month and came out around $400 ahead. That about usual for me. I don't go large. I keep it small and simple and it usually pays off in the end. I stick to Blackjack and Craps as those tend to give you the best odds. Plus it gives you a chance to interact with your fellow players and a good chatty table is tons of fun even if you're losing.
