Okay, this is the first of two threads I'll be posting now needing help and advice in matters of great import. Or that kind of thing, anyway :p.

Basically, while cycling home from work tonight, I had the misfortune to have the bike chain snap off completely. As in, it has completely come off, broken, and can't be put back on again. So, I need to go and get it repaired tomorrow, but there's a problem. My parents, who bought the bike, gave it me on the proviso that I could use it for university, and then since I leave now and my brother goes to university in September, I would then give it to him to use while he's away. So although this can be repaired, my parents won't be too happy to learn it's damaged, especially as I was silly enough to not take it to Halford's (where they bought it) to get it checked when I first received it, so it's not under any sort of warranty. Also, they're coming up to Leeds on Saturday to pick up a load of my stuff, so it's easier for me to move back home the following week.

So my issue is this. First, what can I say to my parents to try and make them see it's not my fault, and to avoid getting into any trouble with them over this bike mishap? And second, does anyone know how easy it is to replace a bike chain? I'll be taking it to get repaired tomorrow, but the issue is whether or not it's a quick hour-long jobbie 'while-u-wait', or if I'll have to leave it with the shop for a few days to get it sorted out. Also, how much would it cost roughly? I have the money to get it repaired, but I need to get a new laptop too (more on that in the other thread) and I don't relish spending however much on a new bike chain and having to wait another month or two to save up the extra £200-£300 I'll need for a decent laptop...

TL;DR: Bike chain snapped, need to know how much to get it repaired (ideally in Pounds), how long it'll take, and what to say to my parents to avoid any trouble.

[small]Here's the link to my other 'help me!' thread, about a new laptop: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.288486-Laptop-Aid-Required[/small]

Tremendously easy.

Not much. a few minutes. Don't tell them?

it cost me $30 (18 pounds) for me, including parts and labor.

EDIT: I'd have done it myself if I didn't brake my arm after it snaped.

Seriously, if it snapped just go buy a new one. You can get cheap chains for (15$CAD) and to get them installed it'll run you like (20$CAD) total.

If a chain has broken I really wouldn't recommend using it again.

I make an effort to change chains every ~3-4 months of riding.

Well, if it's so easy and it can all be sorted tomorrow then I guess not telling them is the best idea, so thanks :D. They're not coming to my city until Saturday, so it looks like I'll have plenty of time to sort it tomorrow...
