Big Beef with L.A. Noire

Let me just say, I love L.A. Noire to the point I'd be almost willing to carry it's child.

That being said, there is just one thing that has bugged me ever since really getting into the game. After finishing a conversation a little ticker comes up and basically tells you how many responses you got correct.

Now, I completely understand the people who don't like how Phelp's responses can occasionally stray from what we expected him to say, but the immediate feedback of how well you did just tosses all the immersion out the window.

But it's not just about the immersion. Taking the right/wrong aspect and displaying it right for the player to see immediately afterward pushes the player to think "what could I have said differently to get the right response" rather than letting it be ambiguous and pushing the player to think like a detective and say "How can I use the information I just received."

But no criticism is fair without suggesting a fix. I would suggest that they hide the right/wrong type rating for the end of the case, which they give a total of anyway. Also, they could add inquiries that really have no bearing to the case no matter how it is prodded and are just dead ends, which wouldn't count towards final X/Y total. This forces the player to really calculate, and really step into the role of a detective.

The current system does a wonderful job at exactly what Rockstar wanted. A system where the player can tell lies from truths by the expressions of the actors. But the X/Y rating basically lets the player know exactly which answers they got right or wrong, because you can really get a feel for which ones you got right.

Still, it's one of my favorite games to come out in a very long time, and will enjoy playing it for years to come.

Hey, they are going for more adventure game, less skillful interactive movie/facial detection game, I suppose. Still, it probably would be better, and at least this is setting out for more than what Heavy Rain did.
