Now that servers are strong enough, large servers full of players can be supported. Large teams 16 apiece in Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3(Playing on big team settings) can be frenzies on small maps and a better chance to encounter an enemy on larger ones. MAG however, allows for hundreds of players to compete online in a single game. One of its major flaws, however, is the fact that you're only seeing a small portion of the actual amount of players.

One of my favorite shooters, Killing Floor, can support 60 players on a game, all of them fending off hordes of zombies. On a large enough map, the game provides an extraordinary experience.

One time, I played on a large mansion/jail/? with a large main room and corridors leading around the rest of the map. So I was there, Bolt Action Rifle in my hands when a 5 person group of people headed for an exit. I follow suit, and soon our party was adventuring, killing zombies as we found them, until we meet another party, also taking out zombies as they went. The sense that such a large community could get and work together(to kill the undead) was a sight to behold. Even when I died, I respawned and joined another zombie hunting party. It was like an MMO, and I loved how all of our characters could interact and take out zombies and generally have fun with such a large amount of people.

So, how has your experience on large scale/player count game been?

Wait, you can do that on killing floor?

I so need to get that game now.

But anyway, I was playing Halo 3 just today round a friend's house and we tried big team battle, it was pointless for the amount of lag.

Although that may have been him.

I don't play online... So I havn't had any experience of big team games with other people...

BUT, I have a demo for Star Wars Battlefront Elite Squadron, And the large battles that take place in that are really good... I love how the teams are so big that it is possible for multiple groups on each team doing totally different things...

Thanks to Valve releasing the Passing for L4D2 there can be a 16 player match going on in individual maps. I need to get a gold card now.

You don't really need that amount of people to get that sense of epicness.

I remember playing PSO in the DC, back in 2002, I joined this party that was already underway, I was the 4th member, so we were full.
And then someone asked where was everyone from.
A German, a Japanese, a North American and me, from Spain. And then it hit me. I'm a Spanish, playing with a guy from the US, another from Germany and another from Japan, at the same time, cooperating, thanks to the intartubes.
It might not seem like much right now, but back then in 2002, that realization absolutely blew my mind.

That's awesome. It's like a U.N. meeting with Boomas and laser swords.
